Rob here: Over the last 6 years I’ve made many attempts to write a concise summary of what happened and why during covid.
I’m still trying, most recently a reply I wrote to a reader yesterday, which explores dimensions not covered by Jeffrey Tucker’s summary, and which I’ve copied below as an addendum.
In case you’ve never tried to succinctly explain all of the important elements of covid, it is REALLY hard because so many big evil complex things happened.
Given that covid is the biggest crime ever committed, and given that no one has been held to account, it is important that we keep trying to increase awareness, and to break through the ignorance and apathy of most citizens.
None of my attempts to write a summary have been as complete, or compelling, or concise as these fabulous 428 words published today by Jeffrey A. Tucker.
https://brownstone.org/articles/the-big-picture-of-extraordinary-evil-in-428-words
Here is Tucker’s introduction to his summary. Note his invitation to collaborate on creating an even better summary.
Life seemed to be going along pretty normally when the third month of 2020 hit and all our lives, and the lives of billions around the world, were thrown into upheaval. We’ve spent the last six years trying to figure it out and so have many others.
The revelations are flying fast and furious, so much that we can hardly keep up. We have meetings, groups, publications, phone calls, and share as many links and data points as we can. No matter what we do, the big story continues to be elusive.
There are two reasons for this. First, the national media does not care. It happened. It’s over. We survived. Who cares? Second, the reality is literally incomprehensible. Too many data points. Too many institutions. Too many motivations. They all flew into motion at once. Separating prime from second movers is impossible.
Those who try to make sense of it all come across like conspiracy theorists at best and babbling lunatics at worst. I don’t like to sound this way. But every time I try to present what I know in a calm, rational, wholly reasonable way, I sense that I’m not capturing the fullness of it all.
What I’ve attempted below is my best undertaking at reconstruction. It has no links so I invite you to use the AI tool on this website that has been trained by 4,000-plus site records and countless numbers of outside links.
If it sounds implausible, I can only assure you that it is not. You might know more than I do and could write something better. If so, drop me an email and we might publish a compendium. The goal is short (no longer than 500 words), evocative, comprehensive, no exaggerations, and verifiably accurate.
Here is my own attempt.
The Big Picture of Extraordinary Evil in 428 Words
In 2019 or before, a US-funded biolab in Wuhan, China, one of some 120 in 30 countries, made a virus and inoculation based on an American recipe that leaked and spread, causing worry that US/UK officials would be blamed. They formulated a well-rehearsed fallback: lie about the lab origins and prepare the population for the antidote based on a new gene-editing technology that otherwise would never have been approved on grounds that it was too dangerous and not effective. That scheme could turn would-be villains into saviors.
That required buying time while preserving pre-leak immunity profiles of the population via lockdowns for nine months until the injection was put through perfunctory trials and available; hence the travel restrictions, stay-at-home orders, masks, distancing, and canceled events.
During this time there had to be mass censorship of people who caught on, a manufactured panic, widespread trauma, school closures, a removal of other therapeutic options, millions of business failures, a shutdown of the arts and religious practice, plus various technical manipulations along the way like redefining exposures as cases, running PCR tests at high cycle rates, and paying for death misclassifications. This was essentially cosplaying a level of severity that did not exist – despite inevitably rising seroprevalence and natural immunity – in order to ramp up demand for the incoming pharmaceutical product.
There was also a political coattail rider: infectious disease panic enabled a new experiment in mail-in ballots, encouraged by the CDC even before the lockdowns began, thus unleashing mass ballot fraud designed to defeat the rise of populism in all countries and creating conditions for closer citizen surveillance and digital identification systems necessitating mass data centers.
The scheme also required a printing/spending binge to paper over vast economic damage, policies that would hack off a third of the value of the dollar, leaving vast carnage, but permitting an indemnified pharmaceutical experiment on the whole population, meaning that mass injury would have no recourse in law. When the shot finally appeared, uptake was too low to create the expected profit windfall, plus government had a surplus it needed to dump before expiration, thus triggering urban segregation in five major US cities plus mandates for millions enforced on pain of losing their jobs.
The entire time, most of academia, corporate America, and major media played along for reasons of careerism and also overt and implicit threats from Deep-State actors to do their part lest they prolong the pandemic they created. No one has been punished for any of it, and the mainstream media has no interest at this late date.
Addendum I – Rob’s latest summary
A reader yesterday asked me to comment on the efficacy and safety of mRNA transfections, and on the trustworthiness of public health institutions.
This was my reply:
You’re over the bullseye Bob.
Another important issue is the source of the virus, but that’s so obvious now it’s not worth discussing. It’s still an open question whether the lab leak was accidental or deliberate, but I lean accidental.
I spent WAY too much time during covid trying to figure out what was going on and most importantly WHY. As my confidence grew in understanding the science and evidence, my anger also grew.
I remain very angry about what happened, and that most citizens don’t want to know, and that no one has been held to account, and that no lessons have been learned.
Rather than providing you with many links to complicated rabbit holes I’m going to share with you what I have distilled the key issues to think about are.
- mRNA is a new unproven complex technology.
- mRNA technology has nothing in common with the vaccine technologies we grew up with and trust(ed). They called mRNA a vaccine to deliberately mislead us. I call it a “transfection”, or if you prefer, a gene therapy.
- Several attempts prior to covid were made to commercialize mRNA. All failed the safety and effectiveness tests. That should have been a huge red flag for anyone with integrity thinking about injecting it into billions of people after extremely abbreviated testing.
- Given the short time frame, a competent person with integrity would have preferred a lower risk vaccine using conventional technologies like China and Russia used.
- A new vaccine using proven technologies takes about 10 years to properly test and scale up. They developed and tested a novel mRNA technology for covid, that had failed every prior attempt, in about 1 year, and then assured us it was safe and effective, before coercing it into billions of people, including pregnant mothers and children that were never even tested.
- It was physically impossible for them to have known if the covid mRNA was safe and effective, which means they rolled the dice and lied.
- If you review the little testing that was done you will find that it was statistically insignificant, and they had to perform fraudulent commonly used tricks on the data to make it appear more effective than it was.
- If you think back on the messaging from our leaders, they were singularly obsessed with transfecting every citizen, young and old, at risk or not, with mRNA. Why?
- There was no discussion of prevention, or alternate treatments. For example, Vitamin D is super safe and cheap, and was known to reduce risk, yet they were silent on it. For example, Ivermectin is a noble prize winning drug known to be effective treating RNA viruses, and is super safe and cheap, yet they ruined people’s careers for even discussing it.
- mRNA was known very early on to not stop covid transmission, and they never even tested for this property. Why then would a person with integrity push a new technology with side-effect risks into young healthy people who were not at risk from the virus?
- There are simple to understand reasons to expect harmful side effects from mRNA.
- How does mRNA work?
- mRNA causes cells to produce non-self proteins that stimulate the immune system to create antibodies that are (hopefully) effective against the virus. Questions you should ask are : 1) What cells in the body are affected? Just the muscles at the injection site? Heart? Brain? Arteries? 2) How long do the cells produce the non-self protein? 3) How much non-self protein is produced? (i.e. what is the dose?)
- They told us mRNA would remain local to the injection site. That was proven to be untrue. mRNA went everywhere in the body.
- They told us mRNA was only active for a few days. That was proven to be untrue. I saw one study that proved it was still active after 60 days and then they stopped the study.
- They did not have good control on the manufacturing process and dose, at least in the early days. Hot harmful batches are known to exist.
- Think about the effect of cells producing non-self proteins, for indeterminate time, at indeterminate doses, in all organs of the body, including organs like the heart and brain, that do not readily repair the damage of cells being killed by the immune system because they appear to be non-self cells. You would expect to see what we saw, with young healthy people dying unexpectedly from heart related problems, and an increase in stroke frequency.
- Think about the effect of an immune system being persistently over stimulated against one threat. You would expect to see what we saw, and still see, which is an increase in many other diseases like cancer.
- Determining the causes of changes to health trends is tricky business. Especially when there’s a novel virus, plus novel interventions, plus lifestyle changes that occur during a pandemic. Nevertheless, healthcare professionals with integrity and competence would be vigilant, and would collect and analyze the data necessary to understand what it going on, and would take corrective action when signals appeared. Our “professionals” did none of this. In fact they aggressively denied all evidence that might have cast a bad light on their policies. If you were paying attention, it was obscene. (See more on this below in Addendum II.)
- The most reliable data for detecting a problem is all-cause mortality. The data can’t be screwed up. You are either dead or alive. When you transfect billions of people with a novel technology to protect them from a deadly disease that you claim is killing them, a person with integrity would monitor all-cause mortality. If all-cause mortality goes down when transfections begin, that’s good. If it goes up, that’s bad. It’s easy to collect and analyze yet very few countries reported on all-cause mortality. UK was one of the few that did and they stopped as soon as the data started to make their mRNA policies look bad.
- There were many obvious signals like VAERS (vaccine adverse events), and morticians reporting unusual clots, and athletes dropping dead on TV, that indicated possible problems. They ignored them all. No attempt was made to investigate and adjust policies to reflect the safety and effectiveness data, nor the reduced threat from later virus variants.
- I could continue writing for many more hours and still not present all the evidence that condemns our “leaders”. I’m going to stop now, because it’s not good for my mental health.
Addendum II – By Senator Ron Johnson: The story the media — and the government — don’t want you to hear
No one has been held to account for:
- engineering a virus that directly and indirectly killed 20+ million
- fomenting panic about a modest threat
- coercing unsafe and ineffective mRNA transfections into people that did not need protection, like children
- blocking other safe and effective responses
- and as follows, ignoring clear safety signals
One hero in the battle for covid accountability and justice is US Senator Ron Johnson.
On April 29, 2026, as Chairman of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, I held a hearing and released a report titled “Unmasked: How Biden Health Officials Purposely Turned a Blind Eye Toward COVID-19 Vaccine Safety Signals.” There has not been a bigger government scandal during my lifetime, and yet even now that we have documented proof of corruption, most of the legacy media refuses to report on it.
My report details how in March 2021, Peter Marks — director of the FDA center that approves vaccines and is responsible for safety surveillance (CBER) — was briefed that the algorithm they were using to analyze the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) would mask or hide COVID-19 vaccine adverse event safety signals. Twenty-six days later, using an updated algorithm, senior FDA officials were shown 25 safety signals, including sudden cardiac death, pulmonary infarction, cerebral artery occlusion, basal ganglia stroke, agonal rhythm, and Bell’s palsy.
For the next three months, they received updates showing more serious safety signals. Instead of warning or informing the public, they ordered the data analyst to “cease and desist” and then lied to the American public that “they weren’t seeing safety signals” and that any adverse events were “rare and mild.” The whole point of using sophisticated algorithms to analyze VAERS is to find needles in the haystack — nonobvious potential harms that doctors and patients should be alerted to.
With the COVID-19 injections, we didn’t need sophisticated algorithms. The sheer volume of adverse event reports overwhelming VAERS was enough to trigger my oversight efforts. We faced impenetrable stonewalling until Secretary Kennedy’s commitment to radical transparency provided my Subcommittee with 11 million pages of documents. The documents make clear that FDA and CDC officials did not use an “err on the side of caution” standard to alert the public. Rather, they insisted on definitive proof of causation — a standard they knew would never be met.
They were far more concerned about not causing vaccine hesitancy than they were about informing the public of adverse events. They wanted to ensure that the injections would receive full licensure approval so that President Biden could mandate them to the military and millions of civilians, including healthy college students.
Perhaps the most egregious coercion involved healthy children who had virtually zero chance of serious harm from COVID-19. That coercion was based on another false claim that the injections would stop transmission. Some children were killed and others have been permanently disabled from the COVID-19 injections. Imagine being the parent who believed all the lies they were told and decided to have their now deceased or injured child injected.
Also in March 2021, Dr. Avindra Nath, clinical director at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), began leading a team of clinical researchers who were diagnosing and treating individuals with serious COVID-19 injection injuries. Twenty-three study participants were diagnosed and treated, then instructed to “not talk about the study” until the NIH could release its findings and conclusions. Dr. Nath maintained that early recognition and intervention were crucial for effective treatment. Yet no guidance was provided to physicians — one participant remarked that the NIH scientists had “taken the data and left us hanging.”
Adding insult to injury, in April 2021 the CDC published a report stating that similar adverse events were “anxiety” — not a problem with the shots. It was not until study participants began speaking publicly in 2022 that the NIH quietly posted its study on a preprint server that virtually no one read, leaving medical teams nationwide in the dark and the injection-injured left untreated.
We will never know the full extent of the harms (or the benefits) of the COVID-19 injections. But we do know that federal health officials were aware that serious harm was being done within months of them granting Emergency Use Authorization. We also know that those same officials turned a blind eye toward the safety signals that were screaming at them, but they refused to warn the public. The public pays federal health officials to evaluate drugs for safety and efficacy, and we have the right to be informed.
How many deaths and injuries could have been avoided had federal health officials simply done the job we paid them to do?
Currently, VAERS shows 1,676,100 cumulative worldwide adverse events and 39,099 deaths associated with the COVID-19 injection, with 9,332 (24%) of the deaths occurring within 2 days of injection. Most of these tragic adverse events occurred well after federal health officials should have informed the public about the risks they knew existed. Instead, they hid or downplayed those risks. As a result, millions were harmed after being denied their right to fully informed consent.
That’s why I consider this to be the biggest government scandal in my lifetime, and one that is crying out for full media attention and coverage.
Addendum III – By Jeffrey A. Tucker: Summary of Fauci’s diary
Edit 31-Jul-2026: Rob here, I added this addendum.
The truth is coming out now.
Our leaders make me sick. They are evil and incompetent.
I was right about everything.
All of my friends and family were wrong about everything.
Many intellectuals I respect, were wrong about everything.
Covid revealed a lot about a lot of people. None of it good.
Jeffrey A. Tucker, the covid truth hero who inspired the post above, has just finished reading the recently released diary of Fauci.
Here is his summary.
Took me almost a full week, but I’ve finally finished the Fauci Diaries. It is a look inside the state/corporatist system possibly without precedent. It doesn’t provide the entire picture of events but it is remarkably candid.
The first spin on this book is partially correct: it’s an exercise in vanity. True. But there is much more here. It’s the story of the descent of a soul at every stage of decline: social climbing, egomania, megalomania, duplicity, self deception, intensifying levels of malice, exhaustion using courtiers as salve, and ending in total defeat realized only inchoately.
Reading it is a remarkable experience. It’s obviously not well written but that is a strength, a bit like how the “Blair Witch Project” is scarier due to its low budget. It’s raw and painful, alarming and shocking, and ultimately speaks to much more than the life of the author. It’s really a window into systemic corruption of nearly all the commanding heights of society itself, and offers a devastating indictment of the ruling class in government, media, science, and industry.
Does Fauci catch on that the media is using him as much as he is using them, that is, that he inhabited a world of fakery? Maybe but he decides early on that it is only choice. He has to keep it up else his whole world crumbles. This Icarus just kept flapping his wings without realizing that they were melting.
Another feature that stands out: It was always political theater and never about science. Multiple times, Fauci overrides evidence in favor of messaging toward his preferred political and industrial end.
Then you have this strange and persistent obsession of Fauci of maintaining social position with daily infusions of assurance that he is great, loved, admired, admitted to all the right parties, attended all the best events, with a contacts list that included the world’s rich, famous, and powerful. This is all he had to assure himself of his grand life. Even in the end, he does not seem to realize the role he played in upending the very system to which he so desperately wanted to belong.
Yes, nearly every page makes me angry but finishing it leaves me with something I had not expected; something like the sadness you feel in a Gothic novel when a promising life takes a terrible turn toward perdition and somehow cannot find the escape from that path.
The Picture of Dorian Grey also comes to mind. Fauci guarded his reputation as a scientist just as Dorian guarded his seeming youth. To do so required a costly exchange. In both stories, the status of the soul (represented by the painting for Dorian) belies appearances.
Nowhere could he have anticipated during the writing of the book that six years after his apotheosis that he would be trapped in a chair in a Senate chamber, ashen and defeated, surrounded by silent lawyers, his accusers on all sides, pleading the 5th amendment 111 times.
The wings completely melted. De profundis clamavi.
I invite you and everyone to spend time with this book for the ages.
There are certain moments in Fauci’s book that just send chills up the spine, causing an experience of darkness for which no one can prepare you. This inauspicious and cold passage did that for me. Seems like nothing but actually 1) we knew for sure that children are of near-zero risk of medically significant effects of infection, 2) the injectable product did not stop infection, 3) the injectable product did not stop the spread. Even so, you have Fauci celebrating how paid-off and deeply compromised “experts” voted unanimously to push shots on the kids, and for only one reason: it indemnifies the industry against claims of harm. This is really hard to take, from Nov 21, 2021.
This is Feb 6, 2020. Astonishing revelation: it was Fauci who pushed Trump to get Xi Jinping to allow a WHO delegation to tour Wuhan (in defiance of travel bans). They did that and the result was a puff piece on the glories of lockdowns, issued by WHO with an urge that the whole world would follow.
The new information here: it was Fauci who pushed Trump to ask China for what turned out to be a Potemkin Village tour. It was decisive for the whole world. I’m just sitting here amazed because though I have written extensively on that trip and its implications, I never knew that it was Fauci who arranged it and Trump who asked for it.
I’m absolutely gobsmacked.
Dr. Anthony Fauci confirms he’s received an “alert” from the (now) Nobel Prize winning professor (for technology used in mRNA injections).
https://x.com/Humanspective/status/2081848415303193031/video/1
About how “the uterus and ovaries take up mRNA-LNPs and translate the mRNA.”Days later, Dr. Anthony Fauci is publicly saying there’s “no red flags” for pregnant women.
Drew Weissman PhD (Feb 8, 2021) – “the mRNA-LNPs go to the placenta and fetus, measured by translation of the mRNA and cause an immune response in the amniotic fluid. In non-pregnant female mice, the uterus and ovaries take up mRNA-LNPs and translate the mRNA”
FAUCI (Feb 8, 2021) – “Thanks for sending this.”
Fauci days later (Video, Feb 10, 2021) – “No red flags.”
Doctors and (now Nobel Prize winning) scientist for pseudouridine, were warning Fauci privately.
Publicly, Fauci presented absolute certainty of safety.
And also, another email (Senator Rand Paul’s email drop) from the NIH on March 2, 2021 says:
“The SMEs on that call (especially obgyns) were aware that mRNA might reach the fetus.”
Whilst former CDC dir. Rochelle Walensky was publicly saying they:
“did not find any safety concerns for pregnant people who are vaccinated”.
Whilst all this is going on in the background, the VAERS database is signalling all of them.
The truth is coming out now.
Our leaders make me sick. They are evil and incompetent.
I was right about everything.
All of my friends and family were wrong about everything.
Many intellectuals I respect, like Dr. Varki, were wrong about everything.
Covid revealed a lot about a lot of people. None of it good.
Jeffrey A. Tucker, the covid truth hero who inspired the post above, has just finished reading the recently released diary of Fauci.
I’ve appended his summary to the essay above, as well as all the highlights I could find.
Vindication always feels good. I wonder if we’ll get a big uptick in people admitting they were wrong. (🤣looking at you Bill Rees, Dave Pollard, and Mike)
Forgive me, but I have to make one tiny correction to your post:
Our leadersHumans make me sick. They are evil and incompetent.Let’s watch what happens.
You learn a lot about people when they do or do not admit they were wrong.
Women never, ever, admit to being wrong over even the smallest thing – they’d rather chew their fingers off and eat them – it doesn’t make them Evil!
Evil is when you coerce a novel gene therapy with significant risk into a child, with no benefit to the child, and no benefit to society, because doing so provides immunity from prosecution for harms to all transfectees regardless of age.
Refusing to admit you were wrong when a source of the evil admits what he did in his own diary means you have no integrity, which means you are a person that can never be trusted, and should be blocked from all social interaction.
I see no correlation between gender and integrity or evil. Male and female are equally evil and without integrity.
Fauci is man LOL – don’t know why you had to be sexist? Sexism and racism are low IQ behaviours
Just another psy op theatre: ‘The Incredible Demonic Evil of Doctor Fauci’.
Governments, not Dr Fauci, did this to us, globally co-ordinated.
It was all long-planned, Fauci was allotted a role which he performed to perfection.
Of course he is a psycho/sociopath. He was happy to do it. What’s new in any of this?
The other psy op is ‘The Incredible Incompetence of Governments’.
Both are distractions from the truth.
Both also work to reinforce the narrative that the pandemic was real, and we know that is a lie.
They distract from the realities of the pandemic as part of a response to Peak Almost Everything.
More Evil to come, we can be sure, and it’s best to prepare for that rather than gasping with horror over Dr Fauci or any of the criminals: new ones will pop up.
This is a nuanced discussion and you have not provided enough information for me to tell if you are correct.
Panic was deliberately fomented for a slightly contagious virus engineered at the Wuhan lab using US funding and US technology, that (probably accidentally) leaked, but posed no serious risk to young and healthy people. That virus quickly mutated into a more contagious but even less deadly variant.
Almost all of the harms from the virus to people at risk could have been prevented with repurposed safe, effective, and cheap drugs.
Most deaths were caused by the mRNA gene therapy and other unsafe interventions like remdesivir, midazolam, ventilators, and withholding antibiotics.
He should have read the research files from Ishii et al that the Truman government tried to keep secret, that would have prepared him.
Eliot Jacobson with a climate change recap.

Jacobsen concludes by putting climate change in context with everything else going on.
Notice that he seems to be energy and CACTUS blind.
We really need a new word. The f-bomb is no longer doing it for me, even though according to the Oxford English Dictionary it has over a hundred distinct senses, usages, and compound phrases to pretty much describe just about anything and everything we humans can do. So I guess we really are fucked to the max no matter what. Do I sense another limerick coming on using this most descriptive word in the English language? Remember I voted for Campbell’s cheeky contribution as he incorporated it so cleverly (although it apparently lost points due to not exactly following Rob’s strict limerick guidelines).
We do need a new word.
Maybe one of our visitors from a non-English speaking country could suggest a word that sounds good with an air of mystery that when translated conveys our predicament.
For example, I like the sound and emotion conveyed by the German word scheiße.
Planet Mind Control” clearly reveals how the government and the media work together on a daily basis to control the thoughts, behavior, and perceptions of the general public.
The specific methods of control are explained in as much detail as the proposed solutions.
This documentary gives the public a distinct advantage when it comes to future psychological operations that the government and the media may organize against the population.
When I was young the mainstream news media frequently criticized government on substantive issues.
They don’t do that any more and are effectively cheerleaders.
Why?
Is it because the internet has lowered the barrier for competition, and reduced ad revenue, and therefore mainstream news is now dependent on government money to survive?
Those who criticized the government 50 years ago were left-wing and anti-establishment. Here in Germany, the left and the Greens then embarked on what was known as the “march through the institutions.” I believe that was already being steered by big business, in part because “exaggerated feminism” was used to lure women into the labor market in order to prolong the fiat-debt Ponzi. Now these leftists are everywhere in the media. Here in Germany, we have public broadcasting (state-run). Seventy percent of the decision-makers there are Greens and leftists, and they’re pushing socialist EU policies, including warmongering and idiotic energy policies. When I was young, I also supported the Greens. Not anymore. I don’t vote anymore. There are also a lot of fools in the AfD.
Why do greens support war?
They are part of the transatlantic Russia phobia
It is truly astonishing how the once-peaceful party has evolved into one of the biggest warmongers in the Bundestag. While earlier generations of Greens still called for “peace without weapons,” today’s representatives know only arms deliveries and rhetoric that fuels escalation. This transformation is not only politically questionable but also morally reprehensible.
From “der Spiegel” :
“Germany’s Greens Have Transformed in the Face of Russia’s WarThe Greens have long been regarded as peace-loving idealists. They are now among the loudest voices calling for heavy weapons to be delivered to Ukraine and have placed considerable pressure on German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to do so. The pacifists of yore have gone quiet and now the talk is of tanks and howitzers.”
Germany attacked Russia without provocation in WWII.
Russia then defeated Germany.
Germany then promised not to expand NATO east in return for Russia permitting east and west Germany to reunite.
Why do German citizens think it is ok to break this promise and to initiate another war with Russia?
Why does Germany support the Ukraine government which has strong ties to Nazi ideology?
Are German citizens in denial of history?
Indeed, it was brainwashing!
Even friends with whom I demonstrated against rearmament in the Bonner Hofgarten in 1983 are now in favor of war against Russia.
Just as incomprehensible as the criminal COVID-19 vaccine manipulation.
Yes, incomprehensible.
Also incomprehensible why Israel supports Nazis in Ukraine.
There is a women on YouTube who reads the original writings of the zionists (she reads german). Then she explains what their arguments and thinking were.
They were incredibly racist to russian jews. Their attitudes were very similar to the NAZIs. If I find that person again I will share her account.
I suspect that it’s because Israel and Ukraine are both funded by the U.S., and Russia is allied with Iran.
Because they see Russia as the aggressor in this situation, not Ukraine.
Peace demonstration in Bonn’s Hofgarten in 1983
The peace demonstration in Bonn’s Hofgarten on October 22, 1983, was one of several events organized by the peace movement . Its aim was to prevent the implementation of NATO’s Double-Track Decision .
Approximately 150,000 demonstrators formed a human chain around the government district. Around 500,000 people formed a human star connecting the embassy buildings of the five nuclear powers. In the Hofgarten, Willy Brandt , among others, spoke to oppose the policies of Helmut Schmidt and Helmut Kohl : “We don’t need more means of mass destruction in Germany, we need fewer.” [ 1 ]
In Baden-Württemberg, a human chain was formed from Stuttgart to Neu-Ulm on the same day . Further events took place in Hamburg (approximately 400,000 participants), [ 2 ] Berlin , Rome , Vienna , Stockholm , London , and other cities. In Germany alone, more than one million people were mobilized.
Wikipedia
WW2 was a lot more complex than that.
You’re right.
Germany also lost WWI and the British/French victors imposed too harsh terms on Germany which caused hyperinflation and social unrest which enabled Hitler to take over who then sought revenge by attacking western Europe for loot, Poland for land, and Russia for oil.
The German Greens also have horrific pro child abuse ideology in the origins. For example, trying to remove the age of consent. Disgusting perverts
I’m surprised that no one has posted Dr. Rees’s most recent blog post here yet. I found some of it completely in line with my personal take on the universe. (although I disagreed with some of it😬.)

AJ
I don’t follow Dr. Rees so closely anymore after he criticized and implied low intelligence in anyone that chose to avoid injecting a novel, insufficiently tested, and unnecessary mRNA gene therapy transfection technology into themselves and their children.
Ha ha! Did he really? Not much of a scientist then is he?
The ‘Only anti-science Neanderthals won’t get injected’ propaganda meme was one of the crudest phenomena of those times.
We can see now that ‘Neanderthals’ weren’t dumb at all.
Nor were the originals….
I lot of people I previously respected revealed their true selves during covid.
Some people, like Nate Hagens, have never disclosed their covid beliefs.
If you are aware that 20+ million people died with many more injured because of bad government decisions and say nothing, perhaps to protect your livelihood, what does that say about your integrity?
If you are not aware, what does that say about your intelligence, or the normality of your denial genes?

Um, Rob, I think you may have come across some very special mushrooms during your camping trip but we love you all the more for it. (I wish I could insert the laughing emoji here just like everyone else but I’m not brilliant enough to work that out)
Thank you, Gaia.
First things first: I promise I’m not the CIA’s AI.
I am a longtime un-Denialer. I used to go by my actual name (David). I’ve read every un-Denial article and every post/comment since at least 2017 and probably 2016, maybe even 2015. I can’t remember anymore. During a brief period, mostly the days of Apneaman’s tenure here, I commented fairly often. I haven’t looked back at my old comments, but I remember a few good ones. I’m glad I mentioned VHEMT here. Most of my comments were mediocre, however, and some now embarrassing. Communicating online has often stressed me out for various reasons, so I’m usually reticent to do so.
Eventually, sometime after COVID began, I stopped commenting and briefly even stopped visiting, mostly due to feeling overwhelmed and depressed about the state of everything, about what we humans have done, about existence. But then I came back and caught up on everything I missed because un-Denial has been and remains an essential resource to help me cope with the way things are. And to better understand why they are this way. And just to be with other denial mutants.
Thank you, Rob, for creating this site and for the valiant efforts you’ve put forth to develop it and to keep it useful as a learning space. It’s a perpetually bitter, but worthwhile, learning process here.
I must say I think this site has never been better since this small band of diehard un-Denialers and newfound CACTUS pioneers have developed a real community feel during the past three or so years. Maybe it’s been longer? My perception of time now is so strangely warped that I’m not sure. Chris(t), AJ, Campbell, Gaia, Stellar, monk, Renaee, el mar, Charles, niko, Florian, ABC, Hamish, Perran, Hideaway [at least a borderline, if not a full-blown, genius of multisystem synthesis; thank you for your incredible work]. I’m surely and regretfully missing some names. Thank you all for your valuable contributions.
I’ll try to contribute a useful comment here or there. Wishing you all the courage and strength to make the best of it inside and out, and the same to accept and let go.
Wow- I am amazed you have the tenacity to have been reading and engaging for so long, but with out commenting, apart from those early days. So glad you have introduced yourself and bravo Gaia for the teasing out. This confirms my feeling too, that i had when I first came here, that it is a special place, a band of misfit brothers and sisters, very diverse, and all wide awake to the true terror of the situation. Thanks so much for being here and saying hello, your presence has been noticed. I think once Christ had a theory about who you might be, but will leave that up to him to mention 😉 And glad you are not a CIA bot! I hope we get to learn a little more about you down the track.
Wonderful to meet you Clash. Glad you overcame your discomfort to say hello.
We do have a very nice little team here.
I miss Apneaman. I really screwed up with him. At that time I was less confident about my MORT and overshoot beliefs and Apneaman was a rare ally who helped me respond to what felt like a sea of visitors attacking un-Denial. Apneaman said something that I (incorrectly) interpreted as another attack on me and I responded inappropriately out of hurt. He correctly thought I was wrong and left. I later understood my error, apologized, and asked him to come back but he did not reply. I hope he’s ok. Maybe I’ll try again. If I recall he’s a fellow British Columbian and it’s possible we could have become IRL friends which would have been very nice because I have no IRL friends that are CACTUS aware.
Here’s your comment on VHEMT:
If you have any suggestions for making this a better site please let me know.
Oh Rob,
I’m crossing fingers, toes, and eyes that you will have luck in reaching out to Apneaman! I do appreciate so much your honesty and capacity to own up to actions that you have later regretted. It takes a lot of courage to be humble in front of your peers, and I do hope your sincere contrition will hit the mark. Apneaman, if you’re out there, we hope you’ll bury the hatchet and accept Rob’s apology. Time heals everything except CACTUS.
Mirror mirror on the wall, who’s the best contributor of them all?… Since you listed me first, there’s only one way for me to read that.🤣
Nice to meet you Clash. As you probably know, from time to time I like to go panning for gold in the older comments. If your last name begins with P, then I know exactly who you are and I’m a fan of your contributions. And you get extra brownie points because you were one of the few who regularly gave Apneaman props and support for his outstanding comments.
Re what Renaee mentioned, I thought you were Max the depressed oil guy from the youtube channel DepletionCurve. Haha. Can’t remember what made me think that.
ps. you forgot J.Doe, one of my favorite contributors. Hey J.Doe, you wouldn’t be forgotten if you had a better name. Since we already have Christ, how about God? LOL
pps. I just refreshed undenial and Rob’s comment confirms your identity for me. Hope to hear from you more. Peace.
Hello dear Clash,
So lovely to meet you and as you can see, your presence here (whether behind the scenes or in the open) is welcomed enthusiastically! It’s just so affirming to know how much encouragement you have also gained from being part of this community and I am happy that you have found comfort and companionship here. Thank you for being such a faithful un-Denialist and for all your contributions in past and whatever you feel to share in future. It’s just so nice to know you’re here.
And how the wheels of fate turn in mysterious ways, you may be the catalyst for Rob to reconnect with Apneaman, that could be a very positive development for everyone!
Namaste, friend.
I contemplate my death every night before bed for about fifteen minutes. Martin Butler got me started on this last year. Sounds like Renaee does it too. (at 11:04 he gives some advice about it)
Oh Christ, you’ve already died and came back again so there’s no need to further contemplate your death! However, you should be content that billions of people contemplate your death on a regular basis as the reason why they don’t have to contemplate their own death, in fact, your dying (and rising) is their golden ticket for everlasting life. So contemplate that!
As for me, I consider myself already dead and each day (if I awake) is a strange and wonderful bonus to add onto all the others.
Namaste, friends.
🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣
CACTUS is depressing but Martin Butler is an order of magnitude worse. He might be correct but I avoid him.
Butler is a miserable old git, intent on spreading gloom with his repetitious posts. I suppose he needs to get it out somehow.
Define git:
I actually love how we roast doomers, peak oilers and climate change grifters on un-denial. It is how I found the site originally haha
I am so glad to come here and see this video which I listened to right through, though I have done so before 2 or 3 times I think. It’s such a good summary and reminder for this practice of death contemplation and why to do it. I am surprised and impressed that you do this each evening. It helps to have friends who see the benefit of it 😊
I can give some more details on the How Tos…
Practices
Natural realizations when we become mindful of death:
But eventually:
Rob – what is it that is so off putting about Martin Butler to you – say in this video above for example? Do you disagree with what he says or is it just painful to hear and you don’t want to see life in that way? For me his work has been revolutionary and I would not have come across it if not for your site here and meeting Chris. I dont think it would ever have occured to me to be able to have a fundamentally impartial, honest and negative assement of life in this way, if I had not found Martin’s work, and it is a blessing and a relief, not to have to be in denial any more. It has changed my whole outlook to life in a way that feels true to my deepest intimations.
It’s been quite a few years since I listened carefully to Butler.
All I recall is bleakness without any appreciation for the miracle of eukaryotic life and a brain that figured out the theory of general relativity.
Sounds like I should have another go at Butler with an open mind.
Here is an excellent new accessible summary of Einstein’s theory of general relativity.
I listened to it 3 times while camping.
Wonderful Rob, sounds like a special time away while you camped.
I have heard Butler say that Einstein believed, when the Theory came to him, that he ‘tasted the mind of God’ – that might not be the exact quote, but something along those lines.
Martin has quite a few talks on it and he did his Physics Phd on Einstein’s theory of General Relatitvity, though he admits he never finished it as a young man.
If I come across one of these ones where he incorporates it, I will post a link.
And I will listen to this talk this evening too – thanks 😊.
My dear Renaee,
I just had to share my first reaction to reading the Practice of Contemplating one’s death, and my sincerest apologies if they come across sacrilegious! As for focusing on our inner organs as lumps of meat, I immediately thought of the Silence of the Lambs! As a vegan I couldn’t really resonate with that but I do appreciate how my carcass has faithfully carried my consciousness around and how much joy my pieces of meat and fat have allowed me to experience and continues to do so.
I believe there is still room to honour the fullness of human life with all its striving and distortions and reach this understanding that all is transience. I don’t subscribe to any religion but I’ve always gravitated towards Buddhism despite being raised in a Christian tradition. Unlike many religions, there’s no deity or saviour figure to whisk away what one wishes to deny, rather Buddhism extols one to face that suffering at the root cause and then it’s all one’s own inner as well as outer work to find release. There is suffering, the cause of suffering is our attachment to all that is ultimately transitory and illusion, but there is a path to overcome that suffering. It is a very pragmatic and human centric view but what really touches me about Buddhism is the core principle of compassion, and how that is also a path to fulfillment and peace. We all suffer and whilst we are here in body, there is something we can do to alleviate that for one another, in countless thoughts and actions of our choosing. I never want to stop caring even if it means I will share another’s pain; the time here in a limited human body will be short enough and whilst I can, I choose to experience and add to the wholeness of what I feel it is to be human.
Perhaps much of what M. Butler seems to be teaching has its roots in Buddhism? Certainly there is the detachment element, but also using the full reality of non existence (death) to make crystal what is real and what is illusion or reactionary. The Tibetan Buddhism tradition in particular highlights the full embracing of death and the dying process (using chanting, visualisation, breath and body work) to allow the practitioner to reach a state of acceptance and peace, as well as preparation for the next life. In a way, we do “die” each day when we sleep and a new life begins when our consciousness returns fully in the morning, so this nightly practice really is a welcoming and acceptance of that which must end in order for that which arises to begin.
I am really happy for you that you have found a grounding path to acceptance and peace that resonates with where you are in body, mind and spirit now. As the famous Buddhist parable tells, there are many ways to point to the moon but we remember that the finger is not the moon but only our guide. Thank you for sharing another way to see, and may we all reach our truth destination in our own best way and time.
Namaste, friend. Hello and best to Andrew and Lee (and a scratch for Coco!)
thanks for all that Gaia and as always for your kind wishes and I will pass that on to the fam here and to little clueless Coco!
With regard to compassion, (you won’t like this view!) it comes first as a desire to alleviate our own suffering at seeing the suffering of others. It hurts us to see other human animals in pain, so we try to help (though of course there are exception to this with people delighting in other’s pain). But I do not see this as a virtue or a sign of superior moral character for humans to have compassion or that we are more highly evolved beings because of it, I see it as part of the functioning of this human machine, in the same way we seek to alleviate other lacks or pain, like lack of food, water, shelter. It’s survival behaviour, as witnessing the distress of another can feel threatening to one’s own survival: we will either try to help and fix the situation or if not, then try to get away from the situation. It is painful for us to be around weakness.
I have never allowed myself to see this plainly before. Recently I have started a new job for 3 hours on friday arvo, looking after a woman with severe mental illness, and I realise how difficult this is, to see someone else in such a diminished state, and I see in myself the desire to get away from it, and the desire to try to help, but my job is not to do either, just provide support which is taking her out of the house and for a walk or some mild activity.
A more interesting question overall is why are humans given this capacity for empathy and compassion, when other animals don’t generally possess it (though there is some evidence for it in some animals). In some way it must serve our evolutionary advantage to experience compassion.
Martin’s background includes Gurdjeiff and Ouspensky, and also with Zen Buddhism taught through a California school called The Tayu centre. The guy who ran the Tayu centre at the time was Robert Ennis and he came up with that popular phrase ‘what we resist persists’.
One of the things that has been most helpful in his work for me over the last couple of months, has been something of a life review and looking at the nature of love, sex and relationships. His work in this area, drawing a lot form evolutionary psychology, has been a revelation and very freeing. I have seen the extent to which I have been influenced by hollywood or disney ideas of love and romance and how destructive these cultural influences are and the extent to which they permeated my early life. As well as more spiritual ideas about someone else being able to see my ‘true essence’ or self, as if some lack is there, which I have got to the bottom of once and for all.
I have also dredged up the past and learnt some family secret by doing this, and it’s all been rather illuminating. But also quite stressful as well, and now I am coming out the other side of it. It resulted in me getting sick with a bad cold that I am just recovering from, but it feels worth it.
All part of understanding the full gamut of this human experience, and Martin’s work in this area leaves no stone unturned.
I completely agree with you that each night we have a mini death and this is a blessing and rehearsal for death, we know what it’s like to lose consciousness and it’s bliss. if for some reason sleep eludes us, living becomes a nightmare very quickly, if we can’t turn off our survival consciousness. The death practice is a way to do this while awake. He also speaks about the merits of boredom to counter the survival drive and the ‘what’s next’ disease. I find that the hardest of all. To sit for an afternoon just staring out the window for example. Everything in my being wants to go outside and get on with the gardening – I am sure you can relate! But this is being used by life, a slave to nature and to our survival and procreation drive, to ensure the relentless turning wheel of life continues. So the practice overall is carving out maybe a tiny percent, less that one percent, that is our own and is not a result of the mechanical behaviour to continue shoring up our own existence. We are the only creatures, when our belly is full, who cannot lie in the sun and relax until hungry again, instead we are concerned with how we will continue to eat in six months time, or five years time, yep – the preppers! But to be able to realise that I did not create myself and I am not directing this life, so what ever unfolds is not under my direction or power, that I have no free will, is the ultimate freedom to be able to let go and relax and float down stream.
Preach it woman!! Great post. Might have to start calling you Renaee Butler.
When you decide to get into something, you don’t fuck around. You seem to have only two gears; all in & all out. (although I pretty much have just one gear; half-assed)
I bet Andrew has some funny stories of you jumping from ship to ship during your journey.
I’m glad you landed on MB’s Ship of the Undead.
I think this is an astute observation about me, and I was like this when I first landed here at Un-denial.
but you know what, your half assed approach has wisdom. Martin says that those who come into his work with great enthusiasm and all guns blazing, usually leave the work quickly with equal enthusiasm, and that intensity is the mark of the beast.
So i have been noticing this about myself and taking the peddle off the metal. Not using my whole arse 😂
Andrew would have a bit to say for sure, and I think i mentioned this to you before, but he would see in some ways, one ‘stale pale male’ to the next! But overall i think this is the last stop, and now the realisation that a ‘relationship’ at its truest, is to set each other free. however that comes about.
But this idea of ‘being on a journey’ is bogus. Which is why he spends so much time on people like Immanuel Kant and Einstein, to see that time and space and mathemathics are products of our mind, not objective reality.
Hello dear Renaee,
Thank you so much for that heart and mind felt reply, I so appreciate all the intention expressed and I am feeling your passion for this path of understanding. So many side paths to take but forgive me for not commenting more fully just now as it’s been a very busy day of gardening and organising some earthworks and now it’s time for that hot shower!
But just a little more about the compassion thing, thank you for that explanation of the reason of this emotional behaviour. I really don’t think that I try to act with kindness because I feel my own self suffering at the plight of another and that threatens my own survival, but because I try to understand what the other is going through and then I act in a way that I believe will alleviate their pain, or in a way that they are asking for help. Yes, it brings much joy and meaning to my life to be able to connect with another being (it could be plant, animal, human) so there’s a selfish element but it’s not driven by my abhorrence for weakness or a drive for survival. If anything, I would be less likely to reach out to another being and expend any energy to help them if I wanted to maximise my own survival. I have analysed this in myself very deeply, is there any intention for my gain behind my actions other than the spark of connection with another whom I see as the same as myself, that is a being wanting to partake in life with the least amount of suffering and pain? The purest spark happens for me when I do not expect any return for my outpouring of feeling or any effort rendered, in spite of any diminishing of my own comfort, vitality, or resources. Compassion, I use this term because the word Love has so many connotations as you have alluded, is what keeps us from becoming islands apart from one another, or at least the drawing us closer so we can find meaning here not totally alone in the cosmos. Humans did not evolve to be solitary creatures, we thrive in social groups and that does favour the development of some level of empathy. If it’s not compassion or a credible facsimile thereof, what drives a mother’s emotion and behaviour towards her newborn, yes, it may be considered animal instinct but I daresay most human mothers could expand on that.
A beautiful can of worms has been opened here and I do look forward to more dialogue.
Namaste friend. Let us die well tonight and awake renewed.
A big beautiful can of worms indeed! I hear the sincerity and experience of a lifetime behind your words, and knowing you and how you conduct yourself here, I know that this kindness and care is a big part of who you are, and how you are, in the world.
I hope you enjoyed that well earned hot shower – and yes to be continued, to pull apart a few more threads another time. I am off to the pool for a swim and spa too, after a few hours on my feet, just cooking a rather elaborate dinner that we enjoyed later that usual.
Thanks for the detailed breakdown. My routine doesn’t get this technical, but maybe I’ll try incorporating some of it.
When I started doing this, I had to use the hypnosis scene from Office Space to get me relaxed and “in the mood”. LOL, no joke. I’d watch the scene (multiple times if needed) and then immediately turn off the tv and get into my death contemplation.
Don’t need that assistance anymore cuz I’m a pro. 🤭
I find this very funny and sweet (not being condescending, legit). You come at it all in a profoundly UN spiritual way, as you have not been exposed to decades of ideas from non dual / spiritual stuff, and it gives you a refreshing take or way. Though one also highly influenced by pop culture! Basically what ever works. When I signed up to patreon there is a guided recorded meditation for ‘body sensing’ that is not so much about being put into a sleepy state, but sensing keenly into each part of the body, a classic zazen practice also called the body sweep.
Here’s evidence that incompetence explains the behavior of Fauci (and down), and that malevolence, if it exists, operates at a higher level.
Is Fauci famous overseas? I doubt many NZers would know who he is unless they were hardcore anti-covid-19 people

‘We should hope, lest we fall into the living Hell of no-hope’
Sir Phillip Sidney
Or in the language of science:
Evolution enabled a rare brain with an extended theory of mind and high intelligence by blocking awareness of mortality, which has the side-effect of blocking awareness of all unpleasant realities, so that evolution’s primary strategy for achieving its goal of maximizing replication, the Maximum Power Principle, is not constrained by the brain that is powerful enough to understand the implications of overshoot.
Following is a video claiming that the USA will begin having problems with NG supply in 2028. I have not listened to much of it. It was referenced by Doomberg.
There is also a letter that was sent out to his followers back in late June.

Thanks, haven’t watched it yet but will later today.
My theory for why the US blew up the Nord Stream pipeline is that they needed to export more LNG to Europe so that fracked oil extraction was not constrained by a byproduct they could not get rid of. But oops, fracked oil is depleting fast and will soon decline. So sorry Europe, you’ll have to heat with wood.
I listened to half of this before I abandoned it. To much BAU, no Collapse awareness at all, if anything they go for some Green Energy/Nuclear future with fossil fuels. No awareness of AI buildout overshoot collapse of an economic bubble. Anyone who gives investment advice is when I just switch it off as they are just idiots.

Amazing. All the other geopolitical analysts are running around in confused circles trying to make sense of Trump’s actions which Robert Barnes explains with clarity in one or two sentences.
Wasn’t going to listen to this because I’m getting Barnes overdosed! But I did and it was good. He says Trump listened to the military and abandoned overnight strikes on Saturday on Iran. He thinks Trump might still do a one off on “Pickaxe Mountain” then go home claiming victory. That would be the better alternative to nukes.
It is worth a listen.

This is part 2 of Steve Bull’s MORT/wetiko essay.
https://stevebull.substack.com/p/todays-contemplation-collapse-cometh-a32
It was ok. Got a little silly towards the end. Steve’s at the point in his journey where it’s time for him to read Ligotti’s book, The Conspiracy Against the Human Race: A Contrivance of Horror. That will clear up a lot of his questions.
ps. I reread part 1 just to verify that it was better than part 2. It is, but I got hung up again on this section:
Why am I letting those questions annoy me? LOL. Are they rhetorical or is he really asking?
Once again, intelligence is irrelevant. If you can’t control fire, then you can’t “problem solve via technologies to the extent that humans can”. End of story.
Time for some help from everyone’s favorite resource. Take it away Mr AI:
Evolution prioritizes survival and reproduction, not intellectual supremacy. For a crow, dolphin, or elephant, current cognitive abilities represent the perfect peak for their ecological niche. Human intelligence was never an inevitable evolutionary goal. Instead, it was a high-stakes gamble triggered by a perfect storm of environmental changes, structural adaptations, and dietary shifts like cooking food.
Technological intelligence is functionally paralyzed without fire. Fire is the ultimate catalyst for human advancement, acting as both a physical tool and an evolutionary driver. Without it, metallurgy, chemistry, and high-density cooking are impossible.
Fire is the dividing line between basic tool use and advanced technology. However, fire did not just replace intelligence; it acted as the external engine that allowed human intelligence to scale. Without the brainpower to manage it, fire is just a hazard; without fire, the brain is an expensive engine with no fuel.
Another good discussion by Martenson on the gross incompetence versus malevolence theories for explaining US behavior.
Rob … “gross incompetence versus malevolence theories for explaining…..“
Those at the top have plans, which they think is in the overall community interest, but then carry out these plans in incompetent ways as they do not think of all the variables.
I’ve experienced this myself when dealing with the top levels of power in this state a couple of decades ago. I often refer to the British comedy series “Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister”, as the perfect examples of what I witnessed and underwent, when in a position of power. (I even used yes Prime Minister as a guide on how to proceed, and it worked perfectly!!)
Those comedies were based on real undertakings of the government at highest public service level and ministerial level. As in there were insiders feeding the BBC comic writers examples of exactly what was happening and many episodes were more or less real. one particular episode I remember almost didn’t make it too air as it appeared to absurd for the managers of the BBC. The show writers had to break the cover of one of their government moles/story tellers/highest level public servants, to state how the episode really had happened. A case of reality being more absurd than the managers of a fiction show were prepared to ‘make up’!!
Just imagine you were Fauci for a second, getting information from many, many credible sources all at once. You don’t have time between a multitude of meeting to do all the appropriate research and the next meeting brings up another angle for you to research. In other words an avalanche of information all at once and because you are the head of whatever decision making body, have to come up with something. Then the next meeting you go to tells you exactly why the last decision you made was wrong, but the one after that tells you why you might have got it correct for the wrong reasons, then the one after that something different…
As I first said a couple of years ago, I expect more global weirding at all levels of government, business, climate, health, food production, water supply, energy…. basically every area you can think of. So far I haven’t been let down…
We don’t live in a rational world, we live in an emotional world, where people follow beliefs instead of facts. That applies to those at the top along with everyone else. Popular beliefs work for politicians..
I think you’re sadly correct about many government initiatives.
But not covid.
Incompetence and/or conflicting information overload would result in a random collection of correct and incorrect decisions.
However on covid, 100% of decisions were exactly opposite of correct.
That’s not possible with incompetence or overload. Only malevolence explains what we observed.
I understand we are all beings with limits.
But, then, I expect more (full?) transparency. In the case of covid, dissident voices were actively shut down. Control increased. It was an avalanche of daily morbid numbers. Not acceptable at all for me.
Yes, I also understand, that the “general public” needs to grow up to accept and deal responsibly with a high level of transparency. But, it seems to me, people in power have been doing everything they can to dumb down, muddle information, manipulate and divide the “derogatorily called masses”. Shouldn’t people in power rather try to elevate, encourage individual initiatives and exchanges, while altering the system to decrease the impacts of mass panics, and respecting freedom of will? That’s what I’d like.
So at one point, even if it’s only incompetence, it becomes malevolence.
I agree with your last paragraph:
But, I also find a fully rational world, without taking emotions into account, would be a dysfunctional hell. A soulless machine. So I am glad to live in this world 🙂
Also, beliefs shape experience profoundly. And belief let us change the world accordingly. This is a complex topic I haven’t gone to the bottom of.
In the end, what makes me tick? Not rationality. Something very profound, deep in me. An intuition of what is right. The essence of what I want to be and want to see manifest in this world.
This, to me, is incredible.
Wanted to add that I believe, we all have that beating spark in us.
I also have faith. Which is something not easy to describe (it’s not the belief that everything is going as I’d like/want/desire), but that whatever manifests, it’s right (at a level I might not understand, beyond me).
🙂
Dear Hideaway,
I am thankful to you for pushing me to the point that I can express this truth of mine 🙂
There’s a cool new feature on Substack that scans an essay to tell how much is AI written.
I checked a few recent posts:
B: 100% human
Nate Hagens: 57% human
I expected better from Nate, although those AI-detectors aren’t always accurate.
100% for B made me laugh. I believe it.
This whole AI plagiarism thing is just another outlet of entertainment for me. The human brain is so strange. We’ll read a new essay, enjoy it, reflect on it, maybe read it again… but the moment we find out AI was involved, we scream bloody murder and vow to never read anything from that author again. Because we feel cheated, I guess.
Everyone is using it. Why? Because it’s good! Ridiculously better than humans. But it still takes human skill to know what questions to ask and then what to pluck and what to discard. If B’s stuff is 100% AI, then that means he’s good at probing & editing it all together. Back when I stopped following x-raymike, it wasn’t because he was using AI, it was because he was lazy about it. His stuff was getting so bad that it felt like he was just having AI write an essay and then he’d publish the whole thing without looking it over.
Just came across this link (h/t Leaf Rhetoric). Haven’t read it yet.
https://substack.com/home/post/p-208247789
*Edit – I just realized I read that stat wrong about B. It’s saying he doesn’t use AI at all. My bad.
I can use AI and edit is so well an AI detector will say it is 100% human. But I am a professional writer, so you would expect a level of skill there
I’m wondering if any of you are feeling like me?
I remember when the US murdered Iran’s supreme leader, his family, and 160 schoolgirls 5 months ago on Feb 28 while negotiating for peace.
Many of us, including me, thought CACTUS was near. Hideaway’s AI confirmed we had 78 days. Then nothing happened. Oil did not become scarce or unaffordable. Plenty of food remains in the stores. The stock market is fine. Most citizens don’t seem worried about the war and enjoyed the World Cup.
Maybe the world is much more resilient than we assumed?
Maybe us doomers are wrong yet again?
Well the bad feeling in my gut has returned in full force. My take is that we’ve used up most of the buffers without any attempt to slow down as the brick wall approaches, and the war is escalating.
My assumption now is that very bad things will begin to happen before the end of September.
I’ve carefully reviewed my preps and am topping up now.
How are you feeling? What is your prediction?
I have a feeling that we’re in the calm before the storm. While I haven’t been following every single detail of the war, I am interested in the wide-boundary implications, to borrow a term from Nate Hagens
Never before has the maxim “Hope for the best, prepare for the worst” been more true. In my mind, we’ve just had the best of all worlds scenario, that is all this seemingly normalcy times since the start of the war. It’s too much to hope that this will and can continue much longer, we’ve burned through all our hopium much like the US is draining its munitions. Now there’s nothing left but the second part, the only question is how much worse can things get and how fast.
As another Nate (the Canadian Prepper) always says, Prep, my friends!
I agree. Yet, I am confident.
It’s time for the veil to drop and face reality.
We will get through though, after a lot of drastic personal and collective changes. Might take some time for that, after the initial shock.
Don’t worry too much: you have much to earn sharing your practical knowledge to the next generation (and accept that they hack and innovate new ways 🙂
Great times to be alive 🙂
The SPR drawdowns (https://www.eia.gov/dnav/pet/hist/LeafHandler.ashx?n=PET&s=WCSSTUS1&f=W) and these graphs
) are the two only pieces of data I watch lately.
For the latter, though, it will give the info only in hindsight.
I find it interesting that the first massive phase of drawdown happened during covid, which definitely must have been about the system reaching the limits. This is now a second phase of rapid drawdown after a slow and laborious build-up in between.
Also, I really don’t know, but rather than before September, I would rather bet on mid, to end of September for the point where the current trajectory can no longer be sustained. Although, politically, it would probably make more sense to make announcements during the summer holidays.
I don’t know: maybe I am just becoming crazy, because in a way, this is a moment I have been waiting for so long 🙂
Just to clarify, I said end of September, so we seem to agree.
Yes, sorry, I read too quickly and registered as before September (skipped the “end of” in between).
Yes, we agree on this one: so we fall together if, once more, we are proven having been chicken littles.
🙂
I am impatiently waiting for Christ take on this one.
Heating oil has doubled in price since the beginning of the year. Here in Maine heating oil was already a problem for a lot of people last winter. Irving the Canadian refinery that supplies a lot of the NE begins transition to winter fuels at the beginning of September with associated shut downs. Refineries are currently running at 97% her in USA. That cannot continue. Lots of mainenance to come. Chinese are back in the oil import market. Europe gas storage is at 50% and should be 75% for this time of the year. Houthis hit the Saudi Refinery in Jazan last night. Still sketchy on the refinery but NASA fire detection confirms. Grain exports through Odessa have been shut down and alternate routes are only making up 1/5 of the previous total. Patience.
And thanks for the black currant leaf tea tip. Very good.
Excellent news update, thank you.
I’d say the situation is certainly quite difficult to make heads or tails of. I didn’t really expect CACTUS to materialize after 78 days (mainly because that prediction was based on generative AI nonsense, which, given how these models operate, tends to give you what you want – that doesn’t necessarily mean the theory is wrong though), but I did expect substantially larger impacts on the economy, typical for an oil crisis (i.e. stock market crash, rationing etc.). That didn’t happen, because the countries around the world decided to draw down their reserves, those in SEA implemented some form of rationing, there was some amount of oil in floating storage and “shadow” transits through SoH were larger than anticipated. Now these buffers are mostly gone and the world seem to be more exposed than on February 28, although whether this results in an economic collapse we won’t be able to recover from is an open question.
However, this conflict still doesn’t make sense to me, at least the way it’s being “managed” by the US and Iran and its end goal. Sure, its original purpose could’ve been to uphold the status of USD as the world’s reserve currency and prevent oil trade in yuan, but why carry it out like this? The tactful “weekend war” of US & Iran to not damage the precious stock market, the utter insanity and childishness of Trump posts (which only shows he’s someone else’s puppet), the lack of a solid US strategy (I have hard time believing that TPTB, i.e. people above Trump, have zero understanding of how supply chains & energy extraction work and how risky this conflict must’ve necessarily been from the get-go, declining ore grades and EROEI notwithstanding), the broader geopolitical context (like Ukrainian strikes on Russian infrastructure – why wouldn’t Russia retaliate? It has nukes and it’s a direct threat to its domestic integrity – what in the world is stopping them, even with conventional missiles? And why would US/West even permit such strikes – why shoot yourself in the foot? Or take China and Russia responses to SoH blockade – in the long term, it is an existential threat to the world economy and I’d assume it’d be in the China’s best interests to get it open ASAP – but it’s been weirdly passive since the start of this conflict and even helped ease the oil price by lowering its own oil imports, thereby indirectly helping the US – why?)… the list could go on.
I don’t like conspiracizing, but I guess Martenson articulated it better than me in that podcast episode with Carlson. What is currently happening makes no sense and I’m unable to logically put it all together, which is frustrating. Maybe, just maybe, the goal of this entire farce is to mask the implications of peak oil by artificially destroying supply and coercively lowering demand in a “managed” manner so that people have something else to blame instead of panicking, so we can enter some sort of a plateau before falling off cliff? Maybe with the increasing tendency to rent and make everything some sort of a subscription (which doesn’t increase physical sales, but drives profit and therefore artificial growth) this will delay the inevitable for a few more years or a decade? Just a shitty guess.
Nice.
Yes, so many questions and so many things that don’t make sense.
Also so many big things converging all at once:
– rise of China
– peak fracked oil
– soon to decline conventional oil
– peak US debt
– declining population in many countries
– peak minerals (copper, etc.)
– climate now a big and growing problem for many economies
– AI bubble with no propect of profit to pay off the capex
I like your theory. I’ve many times wondered if “they” would do something to mask peak oil so we don’t have to acknowledge the end of growth and its implications. But this also implies some hidden powerful group that can keep a perfect secret which seems improbable to me.
I also wonder about Russia’s and China’s passivity. Imagine what would happen if Cuba, using Russian weapons and intelligence, attacked critical infrastructure deep inside the US, over and over and over.
My guess is Russian/China have very smart and strategic leaders that have decided their enemies are optimally destroying themselves and so patience is better than risking a nuclear war.
Tim Watkins theorises the world could wring another 20 years of growth if the expensive western countries went into decline and the BRICS took over.
Is this weekend too soon? 😬
I got my plumbing fixed just in time for a nuclear war? Yeah, maybe.
Trump seems to be in a no win situation from his, “I am the greatest and always win” thinking. He appears to be running into a certain defeat in Iran without a clue.
He also appears totally unconcerned that he is pushing Russia to smack the Western Europeans in a way that will perhaps escalate into nuclear war.
Soon something will break and I doubt that any of my preps will be enough. (I should have moved to BC/Alaska or Patagonia 50 years ago.) not that it would have helped?
Sometimes I feel like the Heinlein character Lazarus Long who has lived 2000 years and doesn’t want to live anymore because he has done everything. At the time I read Heinlein’s books (50 years ago), I could not understand how anyone would be tired of living. Now I’m begining to feel tired of all the ignorance and stupidity of humanity and the beauty of what mankind has done and the beauty of the universe are beginning to wear thin. . .
but i’ll stay arround to see it out.
AJ
I dont know, after so many false alarms, I’m leaning towards the x meme “nothing ever happens”.
Hello Smile,
I liked your comment. That’s a way to look at it which, to me, seems entirely correct. (I wouldn’t have recognised this 15 years ago)
In a way, for the observer that each of us is, I guess it’s mainly about expectation vs. actual experience.
To try and be as clear as Rob, when I expect something to worsen in September/October, I “only” mean something like (it’s a “or” between proposition):
But, I think, mostly will be reasonable: brutal end of the system is in very few people’s interest. And we are only starting to bump on the limits (to me, probably since 2022). At this point, to make an analogy, it’s like you have to shut down some of your servers 5 days a year, because heat is too high.
Intermittent modernity?
It’ll take a lot for that bad feeling to return to my gut (I think). I now believe that BAU will continue till 2100.🤪
Charles and I were discussing it last week. This is where I’m at:
My heart wants us doomers to be right… my survival drive doesn’t.
Sounds reasonable.
In case I wasn’t clear in my prediction above, I said bad things will begin to happen by the end of September but this does not mean I expect CACTUS this year. I expect your 2030 guess is about right.
Rob, there is a bit of a mistake in the understanding of this…. “Many of us, including me, thought CACTUS was near. Hideaway’s AI confirmed we had 78 days.”
This is not collapse happens after 78 days, it was that collapse becomes inevitable after the straights were closed for 78 days. It also had caveats of longer periods if oil was still able to leave the gulf countries and infrastructure damage wasn’t as great as expected, etc.
The timeline of collapse itself is always fluid because of the incalculable feedback loops of the early part of collapse. We are clearly beyond those early periods of collapse now. We probably were 50 years ago, but it’s getting faster and faster.
What we all want to know is the exact point when cities fall apart, and tend to call that the collapse (I’m as guilty as everyone else on this.)
We are building our version of the pyramids or the Easter Island Moai right now in data /A.I. centres/solar and wind farms/Nuclear power plants across the world, that only produce information and electricity and no physical products. A civilization doesn’t exist without it’s physical flows of materials, food and energy.
We are using up all our high grade resources to gather electrons and information ( the geometric and mathematical rules that dictate how parts relate to each other).
((It took a while to work out what the exact definition of “information” really is, and I’m still not happy with it!!))
When does a body made up of trillions of cells “collapse”? Is it the point of “death” or is it in the decline leading up to death. Is death just the final acceleration phase that kills the trillions of cells even though billions of cells had died before then leading up to the final collapse?
I’m getting philosophical here. Perhaps collapse isn’t a ‘thing’ by itself, it’s just one part of the overall process of existing, just like “growth” is and it’s us humans that like to characterise everything into nice separate compartments, when in reality it’s just part of an overall system.
Every system whether star, plant, animal, ecosystem, storm, civilization goes through an existence. It comes to exist, grows, matures then ends, zero exceptions.
The more I think about the entirety of the situation of our civilization, the more I realise it’s our own constraints of language and definitions that limit conversations of the whole.
The definition I always heard was: information is data that has been organised together in a way to make it meaningful…
I’m interested in your thoughts on that
My definition of information is data with the noise removed.
Must listen discussion on the energy crisis between Tucker Carlson and Chris Martenson.
Congratulations to Chris. Nice to see his knowledge and integrity gaining mainstream recognition.
Carlson’s monologue introduction is good but you can skip it to 36:40 because there’s nothing new for us at un-Denial.
I sense a phase change. It’s unusual and a big deal to hear energy discussed on one of the world’s biggest podcasts.
The Overton window still has a ways to open because they did not discuss depletion forecasts and the implications of a permanent end to growth.
Interesting discussion on the possibility that an evil force is deliberately destroying western civilization that started with covid.
Chris explains that he embraced God as a response to this evil force.
Martenson referenced this 2017 WEF video as evidence of an evil force because it predicted that by 2030:
Martenson said “if someone predicts something and it happens, then I’m gonna assume they did it”.
I don’t know if Martenson is correct.
You could interpret it as a prediction of stress on western democracies caused by billions of climate change refugees, which was discussed earlier in the video.
On the other hand, they placed the “western values” prediction at the end, directly after their prediction that we’ll be travelling to Mars to find aliens, which suggests it may not be connected to climate refugees.
Definitely not persuasive enough to trigger me to find god.
On the other hand, Fauci walking free with a huge pension, maybe…
To me, it’s just the way the western totalitarian democracy/meta-organism operates to shape worldviews and obtain consensus: there is a vision based on “western values” (as interpreted and decided by only a very few people at the top), then there is a caste dedicated to crunching numbers, plan to make it happen, and then convince the masses it’s in their best interest to follow the decadal plan.
These short movies and predictions are part of the convincing/gauge public support to the various propositions, to then adjust them without changing the overall objective and intent.
I think this system is going to greatly transform (or die), because the disconnect is too big with reality on the ground. So participation reduces with resources dwindling.
But did God return the embrace?
Martenson’s paid subscriptions are probably getting a nice boost from his crossover into mainstream alternate news, and its possible that Carlson embraced Martenson because Martenson embraced god.
So it does look like god pays.
B is getting very close to CACTUS awareness.
https://open.substack.com/pub/thehonestsorcerer/p/no-oil-no-transition-no-economy
In an article cited by B, the Energy cost of energy of oil liquids is projected to reach 50% by 2050. I strongly suspect that something will break before we reach that point.
https://www.researchgate.net/publication/354885905_Peak_oil_and_the_low-carbon_energy_transition_A_net-energy_perspective
Economic contraction is the only empirically proven solution to reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions. So bring on the collapse I say!
Sad news my friends. Richard Heinberg has passed away. He was 75.
https://www.resilience.org/stories/2026-07-23/devastating-news-the-loss-of-richard-heinberg/
I read a lot of Richard’s work in my early days learning about peak oil. He had such a gentlemanly way of communicating. There is lots of good info on his websites too! A good legacy to leave.
Sad news indeed. He was a very good human and I also learnt a huge amount reading his writings.
My favourite for challenges on LinkedIn – https://richardheinberg.com/178-five-axioms-of-sustainability
His obituary here – https://everloved.com/life-of/richard-heinberg/obituary/
🙏
That is sad. He was a very good man and taught me a lot.
This is sad news. I learned a lot from him too.
I join you all in honoring his brilliant life which obviously influenced so many of us here. I should have been shocked to read that he died of pancreatic cancer only 2 weeks after diagnosis but ever since Covid, I have known 3 people with this same outcome. It seems that pancreatic or biliary tract cancers are becoming more and more common and increasingly are diagnosed practically at end-stage. I know this isn’t the time to dwell on this but to celebrate this great pioneer’s life.
Namaste, friends.
I do not recall Dr. Heinberg speaking out about the covid crimes which probably means he chose to be transfected with the gene therapy.
I’ve been watching for an intelligent defense of the covid mRNA policies and had hopes for this recent interview by Dr. Sean Carroll of Dr. Jeff Coller, a leader in mRNA technology.
Carroll is a SUPER smart physics polymath however for some reason he switched off his brain in this interview and asked zero truth seeking questions.
I wouldn’t waste your time watching this because Coller makes many claims about the mRNA technology “miracle”, without providing any supporting evidence, and is silent on all of the fundamental risks, plus he made a couple claims like injection locality and short half-life that are flat out lies.
The interesting thing for me is that I did not detect Coller lying. My guess is that he believes his own bullshit. I bet Fauci does too. MORT at work again I suspect.
https://www.artberman.com/blog/a-climate-for-civilization-what-was-special-about-the-holocene/
For those of you who despise the official fairy tale narrative of the Holocene, check out Art Berman’s new essay. His graphs and charts help to paint a more believable story.
I already covered some of this in the link below. But nice to have a well-respected scientist working on the case.

I think Berman lurks here. And I think my comment from a month ago inspired him to dig a little deeper on the subject.
He might’ve even commented here. The username Kobayashi Maru showed up last month and left a couple comments. Art used that Star Trek reference in one of his essays a few months ago. If you look at Kobayashi’s comments, the tone sounds very similar to how Art talks to his audience in the comment section. LOL, I know… I have way too much free time on my hands.

ps. If I’m ever in a conversation with Art, I’m gonna do everything in my power to get him to say the words “these are O.R. scrubs” so that I can zing him with this hilarious line:
Kind of slow. How about a personal story. I wrote this a couple years ago when Rob was on one of his camping trips. But I never posted it because the audience ended up banning me from sharing anymore personal stories🤣. It’s been long enough. Don’t worry, no uncomfortable topics in this story:
I was a lost soul when I was 21 years old. I wanted to start a new life, so I ended up joining the Army. Signed up for 4 years in 1998. My recruiter promised me that my job (MOS – Military Occupational Specialty) would have tv & radio stations lining up to recruit me when I got out. Hook, line, and sinker. My MOS was in communications. 31R: multi-channel transmission systems operator. LOL, sounds so technical and important. It ended up just being a fancy title for someone who digs holes.
After boot camp (9 weeks) and AIT school (5 months), I was stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina (another lie my recruiter got me on. Was assured I’d be stationed in Hawaii or Colorado). I was in a holding unit for two weeks at Bragg until I was designated my assigned unit. The first day at my new unit went about as poorly as I could’ve ever imagined. It was a Friday morning and they were setting me up with my permanent living quarters. The CQ (guard on duty at barracks) had the task of taking me up to my room like a hotel bellboy.
The CQ unlocked the door to my new home (which you share with two, and sometimes three, others). The barracks were empty because everyone was at work. So he gave me the key and was about to leave. But then he noticed something by the tv. It was a bong with a tray next to it that had rolling papers, pipes, and some marijuana spread out. Before I could even tell the CQ that he had assigned me with the perfect roommates, he was already pushing me out the door and ended up taking me to another room. After dropping off my belongings I was escorted over to the motor pool and introduced to my team and was told by my NCO (the sergeant in charge of me) the good news that as soon as our Company Commander shows up to give us our mandatory Friday safety briefing around 3pm, we would be released to enjoy our weekend.
So its 6pm now and we are all still in the motor pool waiting for our Captain to show up and give his safety briefing. I’m getting agitated and confused, but some of my peers are telling me this is a usual thing with him being late. At 9pm my team NCO made a quick trip to get us some food because we were all starving and getting vocal about it. It’s after 10pm now and I’m digging my way into the doghouse with a couple of tough-guy sergeants who are getting up in my face warning me to shut my mouth and stop complaining (I wasn’t complaining, just constantly questioning what the hell is going on). I wasn’t the only person losing their mind, but I was the loudest by far. Around 11pm Captain America finally shows up.
He stands in front of us and gives us our important safety briefing. I already knew what these were all about from my AIT time, but I was expecting something important because of how long we had to wait. Captain Dipshit told us not to go to strip clubs, avoid the happy-ending Asian spas, don’t drink and drive, and not to go to the dealership to buy a car unless your team NCO goes with you (car dealers take advantage of the uneducated soldiers, big time). That’s it! And then he released us for the weekend. Waited around for eight hours and it was over in two minutes. I knew right then and there that I would be going AWOL eventually.
Back to the bong story at the barracks. One of the kids living there (Lee) got an article 15 because the CQ ended up involving the chain of command. Article 15 is a punishment that involves a deduction from your paycheck and having to work an extra 2 hours every day after work for two weeks straight. And it’s usually more manual labor type than office work. Lee was a popular kid in the unit and within a couple of days there were rumors circulating about me being CID (undercover cop for the army). Most people in the army are so stupid they can’t see the absurdity of me blowing my cover on day one just for a dime bag of weed. For a while those rumors made it tough to make friends. But after a couple months I was good friends with Lee and his roommates. Potheads always gravitate towards each other.
The shitshow of that first day with waiting around for eight hours just to be told not to go to the titty bar is what the entire time at my regular unit was like. I was always in trouble for something. I spent most of my army career digging ditches. And the upper/lower class thing constantly smacks you across the face. For privates like me, the barracks were crumbling buildings with rats crawling around. I spent many days picking up trash and mowing lawns for the officers housing. Huge shiny mansions compared to our shacks. And then on the weekends (in my civilian clothes) I still had to salute these assholes. LOL. And because I was always in the doghouse, I rarely got any “hands on” training with the communications equipment because I was always assigned to digging the holes for the satellite poles.
Took me a little over a year to finally commit to going AWOL. We were about to go out to the field for a three-week training exercise. The night before we headed out, I got unfairly chosen to do all kinds of maintenance on our Humvee. It was the straw that broke the camel’s back. I slipped out of the motor pool and back to my barracks to start packing. I didn’t have a car, so the plan was to take a cab to the bus station. While packing, one of my pothead friends from Lee’s room came over to see if it was true (most of the barracks knew what I was doing. Impossible to keep a secret there). His name was Joe. He asked if he could come with. It was so perfect. Not doing it alone made it less scary. And Joe had a car. Within an hour we were on the road like Thelma & Lousie.
By far the most fun I’ve ever had on a road trip. Saw multiple tornado funnel clouds when we were driving through the midwest. Joe was going to California, so dropping me off in Arizona wasn’t out of the way. We crashed at my friend’s house. Joe stayed and hung out for a couple days and then I never heard from him again. For the next couple months, I was paranoid every time I saw a cop car. I overestimated technology and even thought that using my credit card was gonna sound off some big alarm and the military police would end up picking me up and hauling me back to the brig at Fort Bragg. Because of this constant “fugitive on the run” feeling, I ended up voluntarily turning myself in to the place that deals with AWOL soldiers. Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
After a week, I was out-processed and officially done with the army. Got a general discharge under other than honorable conditions. The scariest part of Fort Sill were the rumors that if your company commander didn’t like you, he would put a stop to your discharge and have you sent back to your regular unit where he would make your life a living hell for making him look bad with an AWOL statistic. Not sure how true that is but thank god it didn’t happen to me.
When our sergeant from Fort Sill took us to the local bus station, the place was crawling with old military veterans. As soon as they found out we were AWOL misfits, they started chiming in about what a disgrace we were and how in their time we would’ve been shot for deserting our unit. I honestly think those dumbfucks just hang out at the bus station all day to rag on awol kids knowing damn well we won’t bark back because we don’t want to do anything that might jeopardize our discharge.
The entire experience was about two years. My original commitment would have been until Jan 2002. Your last couple of months are a breeze, and they don’t make you do much, other than constantly fighting off the recruitment officer who’s trying to sign you back up. But 9/11/2001 would have changed everything for me. I doubt I would have been “allowed” to leave the army in Jan. Might’ve even gotten swept up in that camaraderie feeling about not wanting to leave my fellow soldiers. My unit was deployed to Iraq in late 2003. That was the last update I got from a friend who was still serving.
Boot camp and AIT were the fun part of the army. Too busy to think. The brainwashing is easy. Lots of gung-ho kids doing the stereotypical mistake at graduation of getting army tattoos. I probably would’ve been a good obedient soldier if I had been assigned to a decent unit (which are very rare). But my unit was a complete joke and filled with incompetency. There is no way I would’ve gone to war with those officers in charge. And if I did go, I’d have been immediately guilty of multiple fragging incidents.
Quite a few people said I’d be screwed for life because it wasn’t an honorable discharge. And that I’d always have trouble getting a job and housing. Those ideas are as incorrect as me thinking I was a fugitive on the run for going AWOL. I leave off the army on most applications. I include it when I think it’ll help. Never had a problem either way. That shit is WW2 mentality. Besides, nowadays your credit score is all they use to determine your “worthiness”.
Hey bro,
Thank you for that, you sure paint a vivid picture and I do enjoy your stories almost as much as Uncle Hideaway’s. The military is stuff of nightmares for me, I can’t quite believe you were able to stick it even as long as you did. If only your commander knew you were J H Christ incarnate just walking amongst mere mortals to feel their pain, you would have been discharged earlier (medically) for sure.
My 95 year old father-in-law still living independently in the Chicago area is a Korean War veteran, served in the Navy for 4 years. He fervently believes that the US armed forces are God’s gift to the planet in defending our freedom and democracy and the most difficult thing for me is to go along with him (which is usually just not saying anything) whilst all the while every atom in my body is cringing. I do feel for the youngsters who joined up not really knowing what they want out of life. I’m so glad to know that you got out pretty intact, and you can look back with some humour and equanimity.
Enjoy these “slow” days which I take as the calm before the next wave of the storm. It’s all bonus days now.
Keep well and give Mr Zeus a good scratch for me.
xx
Great story, thank you.
That is a great story. Really shows how there is little difference between a soldier and a prisoner. Did you find it was wealthy people who got to become officers. The UK army was terrible for giving the aristocracy leadership positions in the army.
I’ve listened to many smart people with high integrity over the last week. All are trying to make sense of world affairs, all admit they don’t understand what is going on, and all are worried about escalating war.
A common theme I’ve noticed is they all are blind to depletion and the end of growth.
Nate Hagens today wrote a good recap of the evidence that oil has peaked and will decline soon.
https://open.substack.com/pub/natehagens/p/essay-peak-oil-ponzi-pyramids-and
Thank you for sharing that article which was excellent.
It has been my feeling for quite a bit, that although up in volume, oil production was already past peak due to smaller energy content and larger production costs (and not even taking into account expenses to “mitigate” environment damage). Isn’t this what can be inferred from this graph:
?
In any case, the number 25 and the following paragraph stood out for me:
To Nate, that’s the worst case scenario. But is it really, given Hideaway’s accelerating compounded spiral of degrowth? To me, it’s more like an median or best case scenario.
I can’t help but feel, this is going to get far more interesting, very soon. A kind of grow up or get smacked phase.
Best.
Even Climate Scientists are underestimating the danger of climate change. Is it just for institutional/political reasons or is MORT involved?
https://jacksondamian.substack.com/p/move-over-oppenheimer
Climate Scientists also underestimate peak oil. Alice Friedemann has discussed this a few times how it is not in the IPCC modelling. As fossil fuels decline, the positive and negative feedback loops will change or change in intensity. There are also significant risks that are hard to model, like mass fires or cutting down all the trees to burn once the fossil fuel is too expensive.
I would also add that my friends in academia tell me climate scientists do not publish or publicly speak about their real beliefs on how serious the situation is. Because there is a level of being careful and conservative when adding to the public record, that is just a general way that scientists are. After all, they don’t want to look like a massive fool like Guy McPherson.
https://energyskeptic.com/2015/depletion-of-fossil-fuels-and-climate-change/
I actually knew a climate scientist (not a big name, just an average Joe researcher at my local climate institute) and he quit his job several years ago – he said he was wasting his time and did no longer care about his career.
I think that was about when this was published: https://theconversation.com/scientists-call-for-a-moratorium-on-climate-change-research-until-governments-take-real-action-172690
Climate scientists understand physics. The fact they believe there is a solution to climate change that retains modernity is strong evidence that MORT is true.
That is the real reason nothing real ever will get done about climate change. The only proven solution that reduces emissions is severe global economic depression
I tend to listen to those Climate Scientists that no longer work in the field or for anyone, like James Hansen, who have a habit of saying what they really think.
I also trust James Hansen above all others. His predictions have been consistently correct and those of his colleagues have been consistently too optimistic.
Movie recommendation, double feature. These two were made by the same writer/director & leading actors. Both films balance profound grief with hilarious black comedy. Beautiful cinematography. Very thick accents, best to turn subtitles on so that you don’t miss any of the excellent dialogue.
In Bruges (2008) – IMDb
After a job gone wrong, hit men Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson) head to Belgium to hide out until things cool down. Ray hates the medieval city they land in, but Ken finds its beauty and peacefulness enchanting. Their experiences become increasingly surreal and possibly life-changing as they encounter tourists, locals, an American dwarf and a potential romance for Ray.
By far the funnier of the two, I loved it back when I saw it in the theater and still love it today. Major themes: guilt, redemption.
Prediction: majority of the audience will enjoy this.
The Banshees of Inisherin (2022) – IMDb
On a remote island off the coast of Ireland, Pádraic (Colin Farrell) is devastated when his buddy Colm (Brendan Gleeson) suddenly puts an end to their lifelong friendship. With help from his sister and a troubled young islander, Pádraic sets out to repair the damaged relationship by any means necessary. However, as Colm’s resolve only strengthens, he soon delivers an ultimatum that leads to shocking consequences.
By far the darker of the two, I didn’t like it the first time I saw it, but this time around thought it was absolutely brilliant. Major themes: rejection, loneliness, legacy, death.
Prediction: if you’re a fan of Martin Butler type content, you’ll probably enjoy it. If not, you probably won’t.
I wasn’t thinking about Bruges after it ended. But Banshees stayed in my head for a couple days. (mainly had me thinking about old friends I no longer talk to)
Hey Chris,
In Bruges is a great film. I was hoping that Banshees would be too but I did not think much of it. They call it a feel bad film and it lives up to that.
Steve Bull has pulled off the impossible. He was able to write about MORT theory in a perfectly legible and intelligent manner🤣. Heck, I’ve been addicted to un-Denial for almost three years now and I still can’t do it. His entire essay is good, but I’m just clipping the MORT section.
Only one complaint: The wetiko stuff. I’ve tried but I just can’t get Steve (or Erik) to ditch that awful word. How bout one last desperate attempt:
The two best sites in the doomasphere hands down are un-Denial and Megacancer. And to the best of my knowledge both creators have never once used the word wetiko to sell their stories. That should mean something. I’m gonna try speaking for both of them; with Rob it’s about avoiding everything noble savage related because he knows that most of the time it’s a trap. With James it’s more about redundancy because he knows that life and wetiko mean the same thing.
Ok, here’s that MORT section:
The Paradox of Our Intelligence
Let us now turn to a puzzle that has vexed evolutionary biologists for generations. Why are we so smart? Why did humans develop a brain far more powerful than any other species on Earth? Evolution frequently rediscovers successful solutions — the eye, for instance, evolved independently in several different species. If a powerful brain is such a useful adaptation, why haven’t chimpanzees, elephants, crows, and dolphins evolved similar intelligence? Intelligence that can problem solve via technologies to the extent that humans can?
Ajit Varki and Danny Brower posed this very question. Their answer, the Mind Over Reality Transition (MORT) theory, is one of the most unsettling ideas I have ever encountered. A more powerful brain with an extended theory of mind inevitably becomes aware of mortality. By observing common dangerous activities like hunting and childbirth, such a brain would recognise the inevitability of death. This awareness of mortality would cause depression and reduced risk-taking, thus preventing the trait from being passed on to the next generation.
This cognitive barrier prevented the evolution of a more powerful brain in all but one species. About 100,000 years ago, one small group of hominids in Africa broke through this barrier by simultaneously evolving an extended theory of mind with denial of death. While denial of death may appear to be a suspiciously complicated behaviour to evolve quickly, it can be implemented by a modest tweak to the fear suppression module that mammals use when forced to fight. A side effect of this solution is that not only is death denied, but anything unpleasant is denied — thus the adaptation manifests as denial of reality, otherwise known as optimism bias.
On its own, denial of reality is maladaptive because it causes behaviours not optimal for survival. However, the two maladaptive behaviours — an extended theory of mind and denial of reality — when combined, become highly adaptive by enabling the evolution of a more powerful brain. The probability of this combination emerging at the same time is very low, and apparently has occurred only once on this planet, just as the eukaryotic cell emerged only once.
Think about what this means. Our defining characteristic as a species — our intelligence, our self-awareness, our capacity for abstract thought — is inseparable from our capacity for denial. We are not intelligent despite our self-deception; we are intelligent because of it. The very trait that allowed us to take over the planet — our powerful brain — came packaged with a built-in mechanism for denying unpleasant realities. We are, quite literally, wired for denial.

Chris here. Regarding that first paragraph, instead of my usual response of, “the reason those species haven’t evolved similar intelligence to humans is because they don’t cook their food”… time for a new angle since Steve is curious about intelligence that can problem solve via technologies to the extent of humans:
Maybe those species do have a similar intelligence to humans. Or maybe even much higher. Maybe tons of species do. The intelligence factor absolutely doesn’t matter! The only thing that matters is; can you get to fire? Species that don’t have the biological makeup to control fire will NEVER end up with technologies that cause anything even remotely close to the mass destruction done by humanity. Species that do have the biological makeup to control fire, will ALWAYS end up with technologies that cause mass destruction.
ps. how about a classic 80’s song. This one’s for you Gaia gardener.
Hey there bro,
Thank you for that dedication, love the marimba. Haven’t heard that song for yonks. How are you? Or rather, how’s the boy Mr Zeus because if he’s good then you are, too. Thank you for holding the fort here whilst Rob’s away, he won’t want to miss this post as it really is MORT for dummies. (not that Rob’s a dummy, I was referring to the great unwashed rest of us)
Things are getting crazier by the millisecond and I still haven’t found a window to call you again. But you’re in my thoughts and so is Renaee, hope she’s traveling well too as I’ve missed her presence here just about the time she took out first prize in the limerick comp. Retire at the top is not a bad idea, after all.
Hope you and family are going well and managing through the desert summer heat.
See you here anytime.
Love from sis.
Hi Gaia – I still check in every few days, but the fear about collapse and death has gone out the window, and so it seems a bit less compelling! It could all ramp up again for me for sure, but for now I am enjoying not giving anything in the news a single thought – it’s been great. I am not in denial of death, and do contemplate on it as you have described you do too, even doing a death meditation practice where I imagine or get the sense of my heart twitching in my chest and how easily it could spasm and stop and also focus on the ‘out breath’ and the space before another breath is sucked back in – all ‘anti life’ in order to not have that fundamental attchment to life and denial of death running all the time.
I agree with you and Chris – that summary from Steve Bull was excellent! Glad I did not miss that. It’s worth a page on the site maybe for that part? Rob has made lots of efforts propagate MORT, so it’s great it has been picked up by Steve. Hearing it descirbed by someone new as a single description like this is powerful. Maybe it’s the beginning of a new trend as Mort infiltrates the doomasphere – though i kinda doubt it! I barely qualify as a doomer any more, I have not read any of it since April, except for Dave Pollard’s blog, which I read as he has a much wider sweep, about human nature, no free will, no self, all stuff that I am interested in.
Tonight I have started reading a fiction novel, that features crows as some of the main charachters. I mentioned it to Chris in another post, it’s from Dave’s site i heard of it. I think it could be of interest to you too maybe? Given your affinity with animals. Here is the link. I have decided that I will read it as a critical thinking exercise, but I am enjoying it already, so won’t be like homework. I rarely read fiction novels, so it’s quite a change for me.
I tried to edit out my typos in the below comment and now it says it’s spam! anyway – it was a long one, so no, scrap all that – and just to say hi Gaia! And I’m still here, just more briefly. 🥰 I hope all is well with you and the property and fam too.
Oh hello there dear Renaee,
So good to know you’re also perking out of lurking from time to time! I’m going all right and trust you and your family are, too. It would be lovely to have another phone connect sometime soon. These past months seem like groundhog day as we’re seemingly back in the same dilemma when we were afeared that the oil supply would freeze up imminently, and since nothing’s changed in the last months (except for continued escalation and destruction in the Middle East) we are still in the same situation but having had an extended grace period–that is the story of our lives! I am still hoping that we will find a window and you can be whisked up here for a visit. Hello and best to Andrew and Lee, and little Coco!
Love from Gaia
Thanks nice to see MORT mentioned however most of those words were a verbatim copy/paste from one of my essays without attribution.
Plagiarism (and deduplication, detection of : spam, bots, AI slop, etc.) – I have a current interest that goes way beyond : lay person / hobby / passing-interest.
I’m interested in if “verbatim” is being used literally, or if some words were swapped for synonyms, or sentences were rephrased, etc. Basically the exact nature of the work (if any) that was done to hide the copying.
Any chance you can post an example of a paragraph from above and the corresponding (earlier) paragraph from you?
PS. I’ve decided to make my writing look more like AI :
• The em-dash above, in Windows : while holding down ‘Alt’ type 0150 on the numeric keypad (not the numbers across the top) and then release the ‘Alt’ key.
• These bullet points are Alt+0149 and unlike the bullet points on the toolbar below, they are not indented.
[Advanced humour follows]
If you want I can :
• Refine this further
• fart
… (three dots, an ellipsis also known as suspension points, the extraneous was truncated).
Can AIs get AI psychosis?
I suspect when a lot of people ‘argue’ with AI, in order to reduce the AI’s apparent choice to ignore inconvenient truth – the humans interpret that interaction as “reasoning”.
Calling it “reasoning”, or other characteristics “hallucinating” is simply anthropomorphising.
• Refining a prompt does not equate to reasoning
• Erroneous output is not hallucinating
“Can AIs get AI psychosis?”
No, but that is what humans will call it.
We definitely need to come up with AI that can get psychosis to better study and understand the condition!

I’ll probably add this to my morning doomscrolling ritual. Will be a very interesting day if I ever see a big traffic spike.
The site kinda reminds me of the movie Leave the World Behind, which I watched again on my vacation. If you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favor. Always fun to get a little scared.

Didn’t read the essay, but you made me think about my MIA archrival Crazy Eddy. He’d be having a schadenfreude overload from that headline.
J.Doe always has interesting thoughts about what type of scenarios might make the masses go into MORT hyperdrive. This whole covid/vaccine mess might be the peak of that.
The best my limited imagination can come up with is what if the public found out that a popular restaurant chain (say McDondalds) was using humans in their meat or special sauce or whatever… I bet even that would be more accepted than the covid thing. “Sorry kids, no more Mickey D’s. From now on we dine at Burger King.”
I think people would freak out more if it was cat or dog meat. It’s kind of fascinating how the human mind gets super-creative in making up narratives about what kind of protein-based lifeforms are ok to eat and which are not: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnism
“An important feature of carnism is the classification of only particular species of animal as food, and the acceptance of practices toward those animals that would be rejected as unacceptable cruelty if applied to other species. This classification is culturally relative, so that, for example, dogs are eaten by some people in Korea but may be pets in the West, while cows are eaten in the West but protected in much of India.”

I happen to be in possession of Paul’s medical records. At the time when he calculated that figure of 35M, he was temporarily out of his mind.
Deep down, we all know the sustainable carrying capacity for a species that controls fire is zero.
As per the 2nd law of thermodynamics, the long-term sustainable carrying capacity of this universe for complex systems that are made up of matter and energy is zero!

Found this conversation of Hideaway trying to explain to Dave Pollard why that quote above is so ridiculous. LOL, if you don’t have defective denial genes, to the degree of us undenialists… it’s probably impossible to accept that it’s almost over for humanity.

And how about another end of world movie (h/t Truth Wizard). I like Ridley Scott, but I’m not holding my breath for this one. Looks too clean and hollywood.
I dated a dentist for a long time and while she never was collapse aware, she would always raise a good point while watching post-apocalpyse movies: how do they still have all their teeth?
Think about every cavity you’ve gotten in the last 10-20 years. Now imagine no dentists. Eventually that tooth would rot and either fall out or have to come out.
There’s a lot of other issues, like where is he getting aviation fuel? Even if it’s stored in optimal conditions it lasts a few years max. A plane in general is pretty ridiculous, they need constant maintenance and replacement parts. Their clothing looks nice. How many garments that you wear regularly have lasted 10-20 years without tearing or fraying?
If there’s a quick “day the world collapses” like they say in the intro, 20 years after that date the material conditions people live in will be nothing like what’s shown.
I agree completely. I watch most post apocolyptic movies and I constantly hate how they all seem to be doing ok on most stuff (clothes, food, transportation). That’s why I always hated the Mad Max franchise (sorry all you down-unders), lots of fuel, lots of running vehicles. After that first tank of gas runs out most travelers would be walking without food and getting dysentery from the polluted water.
There are few realistic post apocolyptic movies.

Which ones are realistic?

Hi Felix. Read Nutrition and Physical degeneration by William Price.
Tooth decay is a modern disease and only became a problem in agricultural societies. Aborigines didn’t have tooth brushes and had great teeth till old age
I’ll check it out, thanks for the recommendation!
With a lot of post-apocalyptic movies they’re shown practicing agriculture or eating canned food, which I would imagine brings with it some form of tooth decay.
Really? You think that’s the case? How can you be certain?
I really don’t know. Yes, collapse, yes. Maybe fast, maybe slow. Maybe, widespread hunger, maybe not really. But extinction, I don’t see that. There are still lots of dinosaurs on this planet. Life in general, and the human specie in particular, is very adaptable.
I found Dave’s answers to Hideaway very reasonable. Hideaway on the other hand, and I apologise for expressing myself bluntly, you seem to be looping. I think this horror movie you are depicting is more of an outer expression of some deeply ingrained fear (I’d guess something about not being listened to, being crushed under an inflexible smart authority), rather than the result of a careful analysis. Because, it is too cartoonish. There is a limit about what can be known about the trajectory of a system under radical change. And there are unstated assumptions for your scenario to happen (such as the speed at which collapse occurs and whether it is going to be global or not).
But I am sure, there is no point in me trying to argue rationally about this with you: it plays at another level. I am sorry because I will probably not find a way to your heart by saying that. I may even stiffen the shell. Let’s say, I tried 🙂
I wish you would allow the fear in you to bubble up, so that you move on. If you can, love yourself, as you are. No need to perform. Best.
You don’t have to recognise any of this at un-denial. Just think about it, deeply, be honest with yourself.
Maybe, I am just projecting and I am wrong about all this. After all, I only have some bits of texts to read, here and there. If so, then, just ignore me 🙂
And yes, you may be right 😉
We will see 🙂
Hi Charles. You got it exactly right there. LOL, just kidding. I’ve been attempting to answer your question for a while now, but I’ve got nothing good. Gonna give it a try anyway.
Hideaway is a big reason why I’m so damn certain. Prior to finding un-Denial, I was already a hardcore cheerleader for fast collapse & NTHE. My logic was mostly intuition because of this unique carbon pulse blip. But also from a lifetime of hating people and wishing for the whole thing to come crashing down. And Guy McPherson was probably the most influential on me about near term extinction.
So when I finally came to this site, it was easy to latch onto Hideaway because he slowly fed my intuitions. (and yeah, early on here I was still a noble savage worshipper and big believer in god and the afterlife. But I was a poser and it wasn’t the true me. That confusion was all from my NDE which I hadn’t debunked yet)
Hide made his first comment here about a month before I arrived. What a fun ride it’s been watching him fully develop the CACTUS theory. I’d have to go back and look at older comments to verify, but I’m thinking it was about a two-year mission from start to finish. And for you guys that hate when we give Hideaway too much credit, too bad.😂
I’m at the point now where I treat slow collapsers like I treat flat earthers. Ignore and block. Not worth the energy spent. My certainty for NTHE isn’t as strong as fast collapse, but it’s still very high on the confidence meter. And once again it’s because of this unique blip we find ourselves in that has transformed humans from Homo Sapien to Homo Inutilis. From thinkers to bystanders.
We’ve outsourced our survival instincts, local knowledge, and basic life-support skills to an automated fragile global network system. When that system finally collapses, we’ll face immediate mass starvation. And our lack of psychological resilience means social order will disintegrate instantly into a rapid descent to violence.
For the lucky survivors, I like this bit from Steve Bull (h/t Erik Michaels)
A population of Homo Inutilis will not possess the specialized technical knowledge or resources to prevent environmental blowback, turning the planet uninhabitable in the short term.
Haruki Murakami, 1Q84
My “now” against your “then”?
By then, “now” will be there, but not necessarily as you imagined it now (or is it then)?
This system does not operate in a vacuum but on a living planet. This system is not static but evolving all the time. Yes, this system is obese, but that’s a lot of buffers.
And there is all that I don’t know, which is quite a lot, almost everything.
We will see 🙂 We are seeing 🙂
Countless proofs of a future of doom are nothing against a present of joy.
Best.
Dear Christ,
Sorry if my previous answer was cryptic.
You are being mislead by Hideaway, in the same way Guy McPherson was misleading: under the guise of science, one potential path is presented as an inevitability. Fool me once…
Mass starvation is highly unlikely, unless manufactured. The artificial “system” (civilisation) breaks elsewhere well before getting to that point and people adapt, if only, by necessity. After all, food grows almost everywhere, if you let it.
Now, yes, we need to live responsibly for the worst path not to manifest. With that, I agree.
And yes, any individual can choose to give up on himself (after all, that’s everyone’s freedom), but let’s not present this as a mathematical certainty, because it is only so in limited, incomplete mental models of reality.
I’d like to end with a small story, from my reality. 10 years ago, I scattered fruit tree seeds on a few square meters of a suburban garden lawn. And then, did nothing. After 3 years, there were some, tasty, but too small cherries. Now, a robin visited the place regularly. After 7 years was a first harvest of peaches. And last week, after 10 years, apricots. No watering, no pesticides, no fertilisers, no work, limited sunshine (there is an, at least 300 hundred years conifer in the middle of that small garden). I have never eaten real apricots before that: tasted like flowers.
Everybody told me trees from seed was a waste of my time for mediocre results, at best. And trees had to be grafted. Well, isn’t it true that the first apricot itself came from a seed? So?
This is just a little story. Life is simple. It just lives, if you let it flow.
Grumpy will say a few fruits are not enough to feed a man. Yes, for some, even the experience of an actual miracle will still be unconvincing, compared to mental tricks.
Best.
🙂
Charles …. “You are being mislead by Hideaway”
???
Do you have any evidence, or is it just a belief?
It’s humanities collective beliefs over eons that got us into this predicament in the first place.
Or perhaps it was just MPP all along and there was never anything we could have done to change path or course..
Dear Hideaway,
First, let me state as clearly as possible what I am trying to debate here, so that we don’t lose sight of the aspect in which our worldviews differ: to me, mass starvation all over the world roughly at the same time seems pretty unlikely.
I acknowledge it’s a possibility, but not a mathematical inevitability. I agree with CACTUS (compounded acceleration of material availability) and civilisation being a dissipative structure.
It’s not a belief, it’s an intuition anchored in what I see, from a couple of data points, from my own experience, from my understanding of the way the world is articulated.
My observation is that this global civilisation (highly densely populated areas, centralisation of power and high-tech) expands large amounts of energy and other material to maintain its particular shape.
Since this civilisation is still going against the flow of life, there are various forms of “conflicts” everywhere, which translate in lots of energy and material waste.
For instance, chainsaw against forests to get a reduced water cycle and then more energy wasted in artificial water infrastructure: large amounts of energy allows large dissipation of energy. The current system is not integrated with life.
So yes with civilisation being an energy dissipative structure. But not
static. When it has lots of energy it dissipates quickly, when it has
less, it goes lean. And yes, it can die, then it’s constituent will just
go on dissipating elsewhere. Again, some will die, sure. There are and are
going to be crisis, sure. That’s the way life goes 🙂
Some of my data-points are:
So, the way I understand the current overall state of the world is a rapid transition under extreme constraints.
In other words, the world may be going in the direction of more robustness, less speed, less power expenditure and, albeit reluctantly, less aggression. But through shocks. It’s a learning phase.
The funny thing about the current state is that it’s not possible to immediately go back to the state before industrialisation: the population is dependent on the current infrastructure. And, at the same time, the system can not go on with its destructive habits: the consequences and limits are there. So, it’s a kind of narrow path between breaking and evolving to care and encourage that on which one depends instead of simply exploiting in total disregard. Co-existence.
There is undeniably a collective and individual choice here. And it’s not written (one way or another), and it’s not as binary as it sounds expressed in words.
If you want more data, here are a few aspects to dig:
I have looked these up. In some cases, it’s really hard to find data. Yes, it’s a challenge to transition away from the current system to feed the population without fossil fuel in a short amount of time. However, from what I understand it’s possible in 10 to 30 years.
In many respects, I am extremely grateful to be living in Europe.
But, by looking these up in the average, in the global, I find we are losing meaning (there is a great disparity) and disregarding the ingenuity of life on the ground to survive.
More importantly, looking at things like that in the abstract, makes the task seems so daunting that it’s generating a blocking fear. Whereas planting a seed is an act so simple and comforting.
Best.
Just wanted to add that the people “in charge”, with a little bit more power than the rest of us are in a delicate position. Sure they always want to get an edge, but they don’t want to break the system either.
Also, they are hyper-pragmatists.
In other words, although his actions seem outrageous, I am sure that it’s not easy for Trump (or any other country/big company leader for that matter), constantly surfing on a razor edge, riding the beast.
So even if their knowledge and understanding is, like everybody, necessarily limited, I kind of trust them being reasonable in the face of more powerful forces than they are (necessity being one of such forces).
They won’t admit it, because it would erode the illusion of control.
Sure, there are limits and things can break. But, it’s in nobody’s interest really.
Dear Hideaway,
I wanted to thank you for having me write my arguments to explain why I find global mass starvation unlikely.
For me, something came out of it which is the following realisation: I am somehow dissatisfied with my previous comments because it doesn’t reflect my intuition for the next 30 years.
What I describe in my comment feels like a race under pressure to replace one system (industrial agriculture) by another system (ecological agriculture? I prefer the word “reconciliation”)
But, if I truly listen to myself, this is not what I feel. I feel we are going to have a lot more time than that and reality will be a lot more innovative (not in the direction of more growth and efficiency) and hybridised.
The current systems are going to decay, but I feel there are going to be cannibalised, repurposed, some of them cherished and taken care of for as long as possible.
Also, once demography declines, every person less will translate in something not to maintain, some more opportunities for others, idle infrastructure to recycle… So I tend to think that the biggest shocks will be the first to come (such as, for instance, the aftermath of Hormuz). And the biggest lessons to learn.
So, yeah, my previous comment is only a tiny aspect, a slice of what is to come, which, I believe will turn out surprising for us doomers.
I know you dislike anything not backed up with data and facts. And you are right about that. But, still I wanted to share it in all transparency.
This is a new world to participate in with our hearts.
Best 🙂
Charles …. Of course I couldn’t let this one go through to the keeper (You’ll have to look up what that means)
“Hideaway on the other hand, and I apologise for expressing myself bluntly, you seem to be looping. You have no idea how much I wish you were correct, that it is just a thought with zero analysis and easily proven to be bollocks..
The problem is the entire CACTUS analysis, including fast collapse, is totally based on well accepted physics, the energy flows of dissipative energy systems that are undergoing super-linear scaling to get to where they currently are. The exceptions of fast collapse are zero!!
If you can prove civilization is not an energy dissipative structure, I’m all ears. Likewise for our scaling over the last few centuries…
“Maybe, I am just projecting and I am wrong about all this. After all, I only have some bits of texts to read, here and there.”
Project away, but do some research to prove up your points.
The usual response against fast collapse is that humans have agency so can change. I personally doubt this on a civilizational scale, after all we already have the perfect example growing CO2 levels since the first COP meeting, changed nothing…

Dear Hideaway,
🙂
I wish you best.
Even the great and powerful Jesus Christ needs a spiritual advisor. Charles used to fill that role for me. Unfortunately, I had to fire his ass a while back for slacking off on the job😂. But I’m very satisfied with my new advisor, Martin Butler:
https://martinbutler.substack.com/p/gods-belly-laugh?utm_source=profile&utm_medium=reader2
Had to check back in after i fired off the email to you! Love the belly laugh from God and love that we are on the same page here. Thanks for movie rec above too – still gotta satisfy the beast with some entertainment when we can find it. In fact i had a LOL moment after Martin’s post today – he has a recommendation, it will seem a bit out of context, but sticking it here anyway ….
It is with regard to not going along with the social niceities of society and all the pretending in social interactions…
I saw the Hideaway comment on Dave’s blog too – but Dave did not get the point and just referred to those two books from the past. The idea of a supanova ending still seems only to be considered here.
i had a moment of folly and ordered a book Dave spoke highly of in an earlier post (actually Andrew ordered it after I read the review out loud to him as he reckoned it sounded great) and it was about these kids during WW2 surviving in the forest with crows, and of course about our inherent kind or cooporative nature! It was a convincing interview about it with the author and Chris Hedges. I wonder if you caught up on that post too? or you did not scroll that far back? Or maybe ignored it and moved on as I should have done. I know sometimes I distract myself intellectually, and that was an example. Andrew of course is not a fan of negative philosophy so jumped at a chance to get anything postivie for me to read. That’s why we must keep it to ourselves and be sealed. For our own inner pleasure and power. Not always easy to do (esp given how caught up in it i have been)
This is another fav recent essay 🙂
And in the End …
Having calmed your emotions, ejected all your beliefs, ideas, and opinions, and killed the habit of resisting desires, what are you left with? You are left with your body, the thing you were born with. It just wants to breathe, eat when hungry, fornicate when horny, and sleep when tired. Your thoughts are generally unworthy of your attention unless they deal with something urgent. After years of observing and understanding the emotions, they shouldn’t be troublesome except in extreme circumstances. And your desires are tamed by giving them a “wide pasture”.
Having made friends with the beast, attention will naturally migrate from the head to the chest and abdomen. Some people think that it’s a good idea to force attention to focus on this area, but it isn’t, and won’t achieve anything. Spiritual amateurs might have come across the idea that attention migrates from the head to the chest in some trashy spiritual book, and that it represents an advanced stage of spiritual development. It’s nothing of the sort. It is the natural outcome of dealing with the vapor in your head, your emotional screaming baby, and the bull driving your desires. There is nothing spiritual about it, just a natural physical process.
The natural outcome of attention shifting to the chest is the desire to keep it there for longer periods. Having to attend to thought becomes tiresome, and emotional excitement induces a sort of nausea, so the chest becomes a place of calm and rest. What is being talked about here comes from many years of struggle, and not least the struggle to see our internal phenomena (thoughts, emotions, desires) as nothing more than noise. When they have been burned up in the fire of understanding, the attention finds no place to rest other than the body. This is, of course, very Zen, where the teacher tells the student that Zen is walking, sleeping, eating, defecating, and fornicating. It all sounds so easy, but nothing is more difficult than to walk, sleep, eat, defecate, and fornicate as pure acts. Only after you have killed your most loved children might it be possible.
That was very good.
Butler’s text, on the other hand, bored me after reading just one sentence.
You don’t need a spiritual advisor (unless it’s me, of course https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/svg/1f923.svg)

FYI, I’ll be away camping July 17-24 so I’ll be mostly quiet over that period.
Have a nice trip.
I’ve followed Mercogliano since the Iran war started. He’s usually very good at explaining global shipping.
Recorded June 29 and a lot’s happened since then.
Interesting facts I did not know:
– China builds 80% of all ships in the world.
– Ships used to last 40 years, now they last only 15 years.
– The biggest ships now carry 25,000 containers.

Chris Martenson interviews Simon Dixon for 2 hours on his theories of what is actually going on in the world with the wars, geopolitics, and economics.
Is he right? I don’t know.
It feels like he constructed a plausible story to connect many important dots.
But you can also connect those dots by simply saying everyone everywhere is executing the MPP, and responding to scarcity.
Nevertheless it’s a very good intelligent wide-ranging thought-provoking discussion.
Simon also offers some good advice for young people
Both Chris and Simon say that spirituality has become very important in their lives for navigating the coming changes.
P.S. There are timestamps in the description so you can jump to any topic that interests you.
Chris’s discussion on how shallow and malleable the beliefs of most citizens are was excellent.
He used covid as an example with many people being certain of “facts” with zero substance backing those beliefs.
Martenson made a fool of himself during Covid, don’t forget!
‘Cluster cluster, boom!’ Scare-monger out of his depth.
And my God the man has aged rapidly, I do wonder why?
In the early days of covid I too was fooled by the fear propaganda.
What I value most in a person is integrity.
Everyone makes mistakes but what’s important is that when evidence illuminates the mistake a person with integrity will acknowledge the mistake, and apologizes if people were harmed.
I’ve seen Martenson correct himself many times.
Healthcare “professionals” have zero integrity.
This was interesting.
But I think Occam’s razor should apply and your explanation for everyone executing MPP in response to scacity is a better explanation. Simon’s explanation requires more coordination amoung business cabals, elites, governments and multiple other entities than seems possible?

I enjoyed this 1987 article from Jared Diamond about agriculture being our worst mistake. I’m sure most of you have seen this somewhere along your awareness journey. I read it early on in my Michael Dowd days. Was one of the main things that made me start preaching to friends/family about how we need to go back to being H/G’s because of their utopian lifestyles.🤭🤪
Takes a while to no longer see this stuff in terms of mistakes and choices. Bipedalism, fire, eToM/MORT, agriculture, civilization, written word, fossil fuels, nuclear weapons, social media, AI, CACTUS. Just all part of the blob’s inevitability on the MPP road to hell.
The human brain and USA are very similar; brain is only 2% of total body mass yet consumes 20% of the body’s energy… USA is only 4% of world population yet consumes 20% of the world’s energy. Every living thing in the universe would take that type of energy dominance if given the opportunity. No choices or mistakes involved. Just biological programming. But even that still sounds like a purpose or goal. The only purpose is survival & reproduction.
Admittedly, I’m still hung up on these last 500 years being the most evil. But none of my “what if” scenarios involve a much better civilization. Just more of a delay until CACTUS hits.
Thinking about the peak of what’s possible… of course we’re limited to just one model to work with, but it seems like Earth’s blueprint is the only possible way to get there. The Old World was never gonna get there on its own. It needed a whole nother worlds worth of resources. What if the New World was at the same pace as Old World? I don’t think we’d have reached the peak.
I asked AI and it agrees:
That is a fascinating historical counterfactual. You are pointing out a massive truth: the industrial and technological “peak” of the modern era was heavily fueled by the sudden, massive injection of resources from the Americas. If the New World had been advancing at the exact same technological and economic pace as the Old World in 1492, global history would have completely changed. We likely would not have reached our current technological heights.
Here is why that resource and developmental balance mattered so much:
The Resource Injection Disappeared
A Fragmented Global Power Balance
The Population and Food Dynamics
In short, our current “peak” relied on a specific imbalance: one half of the world acting as a resource catalyst for the other. Two equally matched, fully developed worlds would have competed horizontally, likely leading to resource scarcity and slower, more fragmented progress.
ps. Very strange that Diamond doesn’t mention the Holocene or anything climate related. Maybe this was just a chapter in of one of his books and he goes into more detail.
pps. This is a fun song about environmental degradation and humanity’s confused, destructive place in the universe. Weaving real-world ecological anxieties of the late 1980s with ancient mythology and biblical numerology.
The President of the United States of America:
I wonder, at what point will Putin decide to punish the west? Unless he can stop western (NATO/ukrainian) drones hitting Russian refineries he will have more serious problems. Putin’s patience seems inexhaustable?
AJ
I wonder too.
Maybe we don’t understand what is going on inside Russia.
Hello my precious children. It’s so good to be back home with my tribe where I belong.
The Normie world (aka Clueless Fucking Morons!!!!) was rough. I had some fun but overall, there’s just nothing there for me anymore. My metamorphosis into the Caitlin Rucker character from The Sopranos is totally complete. I’m too much of a debbie downer for my peeps that prefer to keep their heads buried in the sand. They want to be entertained and distracted 24/7. Somehow I was able to get into a couple meaningful conversations, but it was like pulling teeth.
I just got done getting up to speed with un-Denial. My massive ego took a big hit because I saw how excellent & interesting this site was without me (but don’t worry, that won’t stop me from continuing to contribute and force my opinions on y’all😂). I didn’t bother “liking” anything cuz I would’ve ended up hitting the thumbs up button on everything. A lot of the comments made me think of that oldie but goodie favorite quote of mine:
ps. I also got caught up with Megacancer as well. I thought this comment from James was worth sharing:
pss. After almost two weeks without getting on the internet, it has become even more obvious to me that undenial & megacancer are my Corazón de Oro… the girl with the Heart of Gold that I’ve been looking for my whole life. I’m in love with both my girls! There’s only one thing I love more… Mr Zeus, of course.
Welcome back. We missed you. I was wondering if you were having so much fun you might never come back to this depressing place.
“Fame is a vapour – the only earthly certainty is oblivion” – Mark Twain in this movie:
“You may make some people” ought to be one of the creepiest lines ever recorded for a children’s movie!
Rob, have any of these so called experts put together how Russia has been forced to export more crude oil to compensate for all the refineries bombed by drones from Ukraine?
This just happens to make more oil available for the Western refineries that are short of gulf oil and probably why the USA is acting in such disregard to the world chaos and another reason why oil futures prices are not sky high. Russia internally gets rationing while the west gets cheaper oil.
Coincidence? Not a chance…
I’ve been curious why Ukraine keeps attacking refineries but not oil export facilities nor oil infrastructure.
Does anyone think the ‘war planners’ have gamed the effect of diesel shortages in Russia and what this will do to grain supplies in 2027 and 2028? I don’t think they are true system analysts at all, just short term thinkers of gaming the system…
I’ve seen oblique mentions of your theory but never as clearly explained as you just did.
Your idea conflicts with others claiming that a rising crack spread suggests a refinery shortage.
Do western refineries have the capacity to make up for the loss of 1M barrels of exported diesel from Russia?
Will Russia have an internal shortage of diesel now that they’ve banned exports?
I do not know what is true.
Russia is exporting more crude oil at low prices while buying diesel/gasoline imports at higher prices due to the crack spread being higher.
Basically Russia losing ‘money’ over this while someone else is making money out of it. (CIA via commodity futures contracts, if they knew it was going to happen in advance??).
How does the saying go? If you want to know what’s really going on, then follow the money..
It’s always the money. 😠
Although my sense is the Iranians are willing to forgo some money in exchange for revenge against the great Satan.
Imagine if Iran killed everyone in the White House plus 160 US schoolgirls in a sneak attack while pretending to negotiate for peace.

Hormooz is the second and last structural psychological operation (set-piece) set-piece of the Non-Public Degrowth Agenda (DA). The plandemic was the first.
The plandemic’s primary function was to artificially destroy the equivalent of 30pc of 1.5yrs of global oil demand over the course of 5 years (the plandemic production drop plus the plandemic production ‘recovery’ period) in order to buy 6 more years of BAU by maxing out the inflation that the civilizational financial system can handle before it collapses.
Hormooz is for covering for that terminal financial collapse with political Stoopidity, culling the least affordable oil plays, implementing permanent global rationing, blocking the possibility of the Export Land Model from being a factor by trashing the refining capabilities of the biggest exporting nations, and creating the multilateral global politics of anti-Zionism, anti-imperialism, and anti-nuclearism which will result in nationalized (public) USD stablecoins progressively and rapidly replacing the Federal Reserve Note as the global reserve currency.
Thanks el mar!
Is this his first post on this theme or has there been more detail in other posts?
Destroying refineries to block the Export Land Model is a big new idea I’ve not heard before. Only slightly nicer than culling them with a neutron bomb or EMP.
This is the background. I cannot summarize it completly, because i do not understand everything. So here are some of reantes statements:

The Big Nuclear Scare BNS (the combined climaxes of the engineered Iran and Ukrainian wars) is the second set- piece of the 8 year old Non-Public Degrowth Agenda. The first was the plandemic. All covertly managed events, at the supranational level, and that operate under political cover, are psychological operations. The purpose of the BNS is to attempt to control the catastrophic collapse of Global Capitalism due to peak oil collapse. Superficially looks like accelerationism but actually functions as decelerationism. Smart, because public decelerationism — classical public degrowth political theory which would have had to be implemented 30 years ago or whatever under the theory — is a political paradox that cannot exist in a market reality because all medium- and long-term investment would cease, which would be like stomping on the brakes rather than decelerating. So the only realistic way to implement Degrowth is just waiting til the last minute before stomping on the brakes in order to minimize the worst of the damage ie, the nuclear fallout, hence the Big Nuclear Scare. And of course that’s not Degrowth. That’s slamming on the brakes. The Degrowth in Non-Public Degrowth Agenda is just a rhetorical euphemism. The DA is just the Elite Collapse management protocol that seeks to avoid the chaotic nuclear collapse of the civilization. And that’s no easy feat so it’s a complex, decadal operation.

I’d submit that that’s the conventional wisdom based on either a no-rationing or a stoopid rationing scenario, with a stoopid rationing regime being an across the board rationing.
According to DA theory, what we will get initially is a smart rationing system of consumer rationing but not any business rationing more than is necessary, and further triaging from there as necessary. Such smart global consumer rationing will result in lower rates. Welcome to good old-fashioned textbook degrowth theory! Not that I’ve read any degrowth literature but you’d have to assume consumer rationing was foundational.
We are about to leave the Phase 1 Age of Stoopid behind. Otherwise known as the Age of Gaslighting. And we’re about to enter a Phase 2 as-yet unnamed political age with a distinctly positive connotation.
AI:
“Yes, a global fuel rationing system that only targets consumers could theoretically cause deflation and drive interest rates lower.Rationing acts as a massive artificial choke on consumer spending. This triggers a specific chain reaction across the global financial system.Phase 1: How Consumer Fuel Rationing Creates Deflation[Consumer Fuel Rationing]
│
▼
[Collapsing Demand for Non-Essentials]
│
▼
[Aggressive Retail Price Cutting] ──► [DEFLATION]
Destroys discretionary spending: Consumers forced to cut fuel consumption will severely reduce trips to shopping malls, restaurants, and vacations.Triggers retail inventory gluts: Unsold consumer goods will pile up as retail foot traffic plummets globally.Forces aggressive price cuts: Businesses must slash prices to clear inventory and attract cash-strapped buyers.Creates a wage-price spiral: As corporate revenues fall, companies will freeze hiring and cut wages, further lowering consumer demand.Phase 2: Why Deflation Drives Interest Rates Lower. Forces central bank intervention: Central banks like the Federal Reserve or the European Central Bank naturally slash their benchmark interest rates to near 0% to fight deflationary stagnation.Lowers bond yields: Investors seeking safety flock to government bonds, which pushes bond prices up and drives market interest rates down.Reduces inflation premiums: Lenders do not need to demand high interest rates to protect their purchasing power when prices are falling.”
I guess this process will result into collapse because of the problem of economies of scale and diminishing complexitiy!
CACTUS!
Thanks el mar.
I don’t understand his story.
Sometimes difficult to distinguish aware from crazy. I lean crazy in this case.
Interesting hypothesis.
I am generally quite skeptical of conspiracy theories because they usually run afoul of Occam’s razor. Trump is a known climate change denier, and I suspect that he denies peak oil as well. Why would his administration go along with this?
Now I remember.
I thought the name reante rang a bill.
Reante took over for Fast Eddy on OFW.
Not really, they overlap but don’t match up exactly. More imaginative and wide-ranging than FE: and for every miss there is a hit. A useful stimulant to thought.
Damn, a lot of people lurk here to steal Hideaway’s ideas without attriubution.
Today it’s Canadian Prepper explaining why the US started destroying Russian refineries simultaneous with starting the Iran war.
Notice that no one steals Dr. Varki’s ideas.
That’s because MORT predicts normal people will deny MORT.
At least he’s quick. I suspect a few of us have been looking at this for a while and noticed that the Ukraine drones are attacking oil refineries, not export facilities, nor Russian tankers. (though they are attacking ‘other’ Russian ships)
Robert Barnes debunks the myth that the Iranian people want a different style of government
The United States of America just announced that Canada will be joining it.
Given that my Canadian government supports all the US wars and genocides and gain of function research and mRNA transfections it will make no difference to me.
The video game Fallout “predicted” that the USA will annex Canada in the future:
Perhaps Trump is a Fallout fan and it gave him ideas!
So Trump is the one to end it all and retreat to the Trump vault.
I wonder if he looks on his laptop, called WOPR, he’d find some interesting games. Let’s play, Global Thermonuclear War sound interesting.
At this point, I would not be at all surprised if that is how actual history will unfold. Maybe someone can still distract him with Tic-Tac-Toe?
love that movie
In less than 24 hours the United States of America has reversed it’s 20% toll on Hormuz.
The US is both agreement incapable and plan incapable.

Good report, thanks.
My takeaway: The world is complex and it is difficult to predict the future but be prepared for further things to break.
In their explanation for why oil prices have remained low they do not mention manipulation of the oil futures market. I lean with Chris Martenson that this is a big factor. I’ll bet they’re using AI to maximize the market impact with minimal capital. This has limits which is why I expect a violent correction at some point.
Good analysis, multiple people said the same yesterday. Too bad Chris keeps pushing his best analysis paywalled, but I guess he needs money too.

If you read the whole article that is linked, this person appears to be another shill for western/U.S. propaganda. “Iran was heavily beaten militarily. . .”. Really? Not from what most independant analysts say. Only propaganda says that.
And from what others have said the prior U.S. escort service didn’t get many takers.
Who to believe, Did Art really endorse this view?
Time will tell.

It truly sucks that we all are not simultaneously the high command of both the US and Iranian military so we can verify intel in real time!
Earlier this month, the power grid operator PJM had to kick data centers off the grid to prevent rolling blackouts during a heatwave.
https://stbadhon.substack.com/p/the-grid-operator-warned-in-may-eight
They Pushed Data Centers Off the Grid Last Week to Keep 67 Million People’s AC Running. Here’s Why.
At least they made the right decision. Unlike Amazon only installing AC when their robots won’t work (who cares about the humans?!)
The right decision would have been to cut power to the White House.
LOLz
Energy analyst Philip Pilkington thinks US broke the MOU and resumed the war because it is confident it can continue to manipulate the oil price down.
The next consequential escalation to watch for is the Houthis closing the Bab-el-Mandeb strait which will block Saudi oil that is bypassing Hormuz.
Robert Barnes is the best geopolitical analyst.
Great insights here explaining the irrational behavior of the pampered children that lead the countries fighting Iran.
I agree Barnes is the best geopolitical analyst out there. I make a point of listening to everything he does as he has better insight into Trump’s mental state and “thinking” than anyone else.

Indrajit Samarajiva today with an interesting essay on how (many?) Muslims think.
I’m an atheist but it seems to me groups of people with a deep shared faith will fight better in a war than those of us in the west that have nothing other than football and partisan politics to unite us.
My bet is that Trump is walking into a disaster.
https://indi.ca/khamenei-did-what-he-said/
Interesting to read their world view.
While America or Israel are attacking the Islamic world I guess they can feel like their religion emboldens them to defend their homeland – and that they can feel it is something good and wholesome.
But in practice Islam is no different to Western culture in that it is an expanding, destroying and genociding culture. In many respects you can easily argue it is a much worse culture by the outcomes like bigotry, misogyny, child abuse, and slavery (proven in the statistics!).
I remember Putin tying to make an argument that he was better than amercians because Russia doesn’t do colonisation. Like look how big russia is mate, and it is all ruled by russians. There are many many ethnic groups who have been colonised by russians. Russians are colonisers. Just as there are many ethnic groups in Iran who have been colonised by the Islamic over-culture.
If anything, I wonder if the leaders like Khamenei are probably grateful to the USA for being this common enemy to rally the people against.
Nothing touches the evil of coercing inadequately tested novel mRNA technology, that did not prevent transmission, into children that did not need any protection, and then later when data proved mRNA was unsafe and ineffective, our “leaders” did not halt further transfections and continued to recommend everyone be regularly boosted against a virus that had by then evolved into a benign threat.
Did Iran use mRNA vaccines for covid?
Also recall that Israel “leaders” volunteered their entire country as a test lab for mRNA transfections.
Not as bad, but still pretty bad:
— We murdered Iran’s religious leader and his family, plus 160 schoolgirls, in a sneak attack while pretending to negotiate for peace. We never even apologized for killing the schoolgirls.
— We funded and supported a genocide in Gaza as the entire world watched.
We are next level evil.
I hope the west gets crushed in this war.
Iran appears to be one of the countries that still have the death penalty for consensual same-sex relationships. That does not warrant killing civilians, but personally, I would not voluntarily enter Iranian territory, not even an embassy.
Pretty good economic roundup from friend Panopticon today.
I like his global perspective.
So much going on it makes my head spin.
